CIPhER Seminar – Race Without Racism in Pharmacy Education – Approaches in Case-Based Learning

October 11, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join CIPhER for “Race Without Racism in Pharmacy Education – Approaches in Case-Based Learning.” This online webinar will be held online Wednesday, October 11, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Instructor: Olihe Okoro, PhD, MPH, MPharm. Director of Community Engagement and Associate ProfessorDepartment of Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences
University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy

Description: The use of case-based learning is a common teaching pedagogy in pharmacy education. Inclusion of the race/ethnicity of the patient is often out of convention or to inform treatment based on guidelines developed from epidemiological and clinical studies that may erroneously link race to disease by conferring biological significance to racial categories. This continuing use of race/ethnicity to guide treatment contributes to racial health disparities and may further perpetuate existing provider implicit bias. In this session, we will discuss approaches for appropriate inclusion of race in patient cases, and guidance on how to use information on race without perpetuating provider implicit bias and fostering racism.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the benefits and consequences of including or excluding race/ethnicity in case-based learning
  • Formulate approaches for appropriate and intentional inclusion of race/ethnicity in patient cases

Target Audience: This program is designed for faculty, staff, preceptors, post-graduate trainees, and students.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE is Friday, October 6th, at 5 p.m. Eastern Time
