An Unexpected Journey Through Academia as a URM

July 27, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

The Center for Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery and the Carolina Cancer Nanotechnology Training Program are pleased to welcome Dr. Tyrone Porter, a professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin for his talk “An Unexpected Journey Through Academia as a URM.” A brief abstract of the event can be found below:

“Academia can be challenging to navigate successfully as an underrepresented minority. As a Black male faculty member, I struggled through the years with a dual identity of an activist and a scholar. Recently I asked the question “Can the separate identities coexist and will that make me a better faculty member, a better researcher, and a better role model?” In this talk, I will share my journey balancing both identities, the answer to the question, and plans for the future.”

This event will be held in person at Marsico Hall 4004 with a remote Zoom option available. Contact amy_fry@unc.edu for Zoom information.
