Health-System Pharmacy Administration Fellowship

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is pleased to offer an academic research fellowship specializing in health-system pharmacy administration. This fellowship provides an opportunity for a highly motivated pharmacist, who is passionate about advancing the field of health-system pharmacy administration, to train in a unique and progressive academic environment. The fellowship will foster the research, scholarship, and teaching skills of individuals and prepare individuals for a wide range of career paths. This program is 24 months in duration.

Fellowship Location: UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is a nationally recognized leader in progressive pharmacy practice, education, and research. Founded in 1897, it is the only public school of pharmacy in the state of North Carolina and one of the oldest in the nation. The School is accredited by the American Council

for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and is ranked #1 among the nation’s Doctor of Pharmacy programs by U.S. News & World Report. The School also offers a master’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences with a specialization in health-system pharmacy administration. The program utilizes world-class faculty who have decades of expertise in leading and managing complex health-systems and in training and mentoring future leaders who will be steering these entities for the next decade. The residential offering of the program combines classroom instruction with a two-year residency in a health care setting. In fall 2020, the School will launch an online offering of the program designed for the working professional.

Program Structure

Research (80%)

The fellow will be expected to conduct two or more mentored research projects that address optimizing the medication use process within health systems. Projects will range in scope from being prospective grant funded research to exploratory retrospective analyses. Other research opportunities will be present within evaluating health-system pharmacy administration training opportunities, including the Master’s degree and Business of Pharmacy professional curriculum pathway. Opportunities will also exist to assist with grant preparation. The fellow will gain experience in study design methodologies, data analysis, and dissemination of research through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and to the broader scientific community.

Teaching (20%)

The fellow will have the opportunity to assist with course development and teach within the residential and online Master’s degree programs in addition to the Business of Health Care pathway in the professional curriculum. The fellow may also assist with providing research oversight of students in the Master’s and professional programs and precepting residents and PY4 students.

Fellowship Activities

The fellows will work with mentors to advance the optimization of the medication use process and health-system pharmacy administration training. Key activities and training outcomes include:

  • Conduct one or more mentored research project on issues relevant to optimizing the medication use process
  • Collaborate with faculty and scientists from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and partner health systems on research initiatives
  • Participate in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy postdoctoral association and related scientific seminars
  • Attend scientific meetings and summarize the process and outcomes of such meetings
  • Present on selected relevant topics at meetings or in a written format

Candidate Qualifications

Ideal candidates will demonstrate a strong interest in health-system pharmacy administration through their professional and educational backgrounds. Candidates must be enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals who have a deep desire to develop their careers at the intersection of academia and health care.

Specifically, candidates must possess the following qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a related scientific field (e.g., PharmD, MS, MHA)
  • Ability to write and communicate clearly and thoughtfully
  • Experience and comfort working in a research setting
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively
