Kos Continues Funding of Cardiology Residency

Kos Pharmaceuticals provided a $10,000 grant to support the School of Pharmacy’s cardiology specialty residency for the fourth year. T. Don Marsh, PharmD, FASHP, associate director of medical affairs at Kos and former director of pharmacotherapy at the Mountain AHEC, has been instrumental in securing the funding for the program, says assistant professor Jo Ellen Rodgers, PharmD. Student Group Receives Institute on Aging Award

Doctor of pharmacy students from the UNC School of Pharmacy were awarded first prize for their poster in the category of “Campus-Community Collaboration” at the third annual Aging Exchange held on January 24 at the Friday Center. The students receiving the award were third-year pharmacy students Ted Hancock, Glenda Shell, Jessica Nonnemache, Allison Tuell, and second year student Steve Gilmore. A cash prize was awarded to the students, who were presenting the poster on behalf of the Geriatric Interest Group at the UNC School of Pharmacy. Scott Named as a John Payne Fellow

Mollie Scott, PharmD, is a recipient of the 2006 John Payne Fellowship. The fellowship is awarded annually to one or more faculty members of the AHECs in North Carolina. It provides support to allow the Payne Fellow to study some aspect of health professions education relevant to the AHEC Program. Projects emphasize lifelong learning, involving experiences and activities which explore new models, new ways of thinking, and innovation. Community Pharmacy Residents Receive APhA Grants

Four community pharmacy residents received $1,000 grants from the American Pharmacists Foundation for practitioner innovation in pharmaceutical care. In addition, Ron DeVizia, a preceptor in the residency program, received a grant from the American Pharmaceutical Association for his work with diabetes patients. Kashuba Awarded “Paper of the Year” by SIDP

A manuscript by associate professor Angela Kashuba has been selected by the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists as “Paper of the Year.” The manuscript is entitled “Combining fosamprenavir with lopinavir/ritonavir substantially reduces amprenavir and lopinavir exposure: ACTG protocol A5143 results”. The Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists is an association of health professionals dedicated to promoting the appropriate use of antimicrobials. SIDP provides education, advocacy and leadership in all aspects of the treatment of infectious diseases.


UNC’s Lambda Chapter of Kappa Epsilon Receives Two National Awards

Kappa Epsilon, a professional pharmacy fraternity, presented the School of Pharmacy’s Lambda Chapter with the 2004-2005 New Member Recruitment Award at the national convention in August. Jo Ellen Rodgers, PharmD, clinical assistant professor, received the fraternity’s 2004-2005 Outstanding Adviser Award. Kappa Epsilon was established in 1921 to unite female pharmacy students across the nation. Thirty-four collegiate chapters and six alumni chapters are currently active.


Graduate Students Recognized by the AFPE and IOA

Mark Patterson, a graduate student in the Division of Pharmaceutical Policy and Evaluative Sciences, has been selected to receive the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education’s Pre-doctoral Fellowship, beginning in September 2005. The AFPE Fellowship is awarded to outstanding pre-doctoral students who have completed at least three semesters of graduate study in pharmaceutical sciences at a U.S. school or college of pharmacy. Patterson’s project, “Effect of Copayments on Medication Persistence in a Commercially Insured Population with Heart Failure,” is directed by Mick Murray, professor and chair of the Division of Pharmaceutical Policy and Evaluative Sciences. School of Pharmacy Announces Amgen Fellow

Amanda Mathis, a fourth-year PhD student in the Division of Drug Delivery and Disposition, has been selected as the School of Pharmacy ‘s first Amgen Fellow. Mathis’s research project focuses on intracellular distribution of new drugs being developed to treat international infectious diseases, such as African sleeping sickness, malaria and leishmaniasis. Her adviser is associate professor J.Ed. The winners of the 8th annual N.C. Songwriters’ contest were named Nov. 12 following a show at the Carrboro ArtsCenter featuring all eight finalists.
