PY4 Townsend Honored with School Service Award

Fourth-year pharmacy student Davon Townsend has been named as the 2011 student recipient of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Samuel Burrus Award recognizing her outstanding contributions to the School and her community. Townsend is a dynamic member of several student organizations, including the Carolina Association of Pharmacy Students, Taking Action by Service, and the Student National Pharmaceutical Association. She has been actively involved with the School’s LEAD program as a student recruitment ambassador, arranging and speaking at various pharmacy recruitment events at high schools and colleges where she encourages students explore the pharmacy profession. School Announces 2011 Instructors, Preceptors of the Year

For the second year in a row, the PharmD students of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy named Ralph Raasch, PharmD, as their choice for the 2011 Overall Instructor of the Year Award for 2011. The honor was announced during the School’s Award Day ceremony on April 17. Additional honors went to instructors of the year selected by the first-, second-, and third-year classes. Three Student-Faculty Teams Named AACP/Walmart Scholars

Two doctor of pharmacy students and a community pharmacy resident at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, along with their faculty mentors, have been named AACP/Walmart Scholars, marking the fifth straight year that at least one student-faculty tandem from the School has received the honor. This year’s winning student-faculty pairs are PY3 student Liz Alford and clinical assistant professor Lisa Dinkins, PharmD; PY3 student Megan E. Graduate Student Wooten Inducted into UNC’s Highest Honorary Society

Julian Wooten, a graduate student at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece, the oldest and highest honorary society at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Wooten, the first member of the Order to come from the School, was selected for induction for his dedication and contributions to the issue of HIV/AIDS on campus and throughout the state. He has worked to spread awareness about the issue among students and North Carolinians and has advocated for increased HIV education and testing. Roth Receives PhRMA Foundation Award in Excellence

Bryan L. Roth, PhD, a professor in the Division of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Products, has received the PhRMA Foundation Award in Excellence in Pharmacology/Toxicology. The annual award honors researchers who received PhRMA Foundation grants early in their careers and then distinguished themselves through outstanding scientific and/or academic achievements. Ferreri Receives APhA Community Pharmacy Residency Precepting Award

The American Pharmacists Association has named Stefanie Ferreri, PharmD, as the 2011 recipient of the Community Pharmacy Residency Excellence in Precepting Award. Ferreri was selected in recognition of her leadership as a preceptor and mentor and her dedication to the advancement of community pharmacy practice. Established in 2003, APhA Community Pharmacy Residency Excellence in Precepting Award recognizes a community pharmacy residency director or preceptor who has demonstrated excellence in precepting, mentoring, leadership, and community pharmacy residency program administration. Kohn Honored for His Efforts in Mentoring Junior Faculty

Harold Kohn, PhD, a William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has received one of two Faculty Mentoring Awards from the Carolina Women’s Leadership Council. The awards, which carry a $5,000 stipend, recognize outstanding faculty members who make extra efforts to guide, mentor, and lead students or junior faculty members as they make career decisions, embark on research challenges, and enrich their lives through public service, teaching and educational opportunities. Brouwer, Kohn Receive Grants from NC TraCS Institute

School faculty members Kim Brouwer, PharmD, PhD, and Harold Kohn, PhD, have received $10,000 grants from the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute. Brouwer, a William R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor and chair of the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, will use her grant for a project titled “Drug-Drug Interactions in the Liver: Effect of Ritonavir, a Transport Protein Modulator, on the Hepatic Exposure of 99m Technetium-Mebrofenin in Healthy Human Volunteers.” Kohn is the William R.
