The Asheville Summit planning committee.

Nearly 80 people came out to explore innovations in pharmacy practice at the tenth annual Asheville Summit. Hosted at the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) on February 24, faculty, staff and students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy along with practicing pharmacists, gathered to learn from those leading in innovation across the field.

“Everyone that attended was very engaged and excited to learn from our incredible line up of speakers,” said Cassidy Cox, Pharm.D. candidate and chair of the Asheville Summit. “They were challenged to think of new ways to envision pharmacy practice by reflecting on the profession’s past and imagining our future, examining how our international partners practice and building interprofessional teams to positively impact patient care.”

The Summit is planned by pharmacy students for students, pharmacists and other members of the health care field.

“This year’s event was planned by a group of second and third-year pharmacy students on the Asheville campus,” said Karen Hughes, associate director of student affairs. “We were excited to have students from Carolina, Wingate University and University of Georgia join us.”

This year, topics included clinical services in community pharmacy, medical science liaison services, global pharmacy practice, clinical practice in Georgia, an interprofessional panel and a pharmacist round table. The roundtable discussed artificial intelligence and pharmacist-prescribed contraception.

The keynote speaker was Melanie A. Dodd, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and professor of pharmacy practice in geriatrics at the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy. Her keynote address touched on emerging and future trends in pharmacy practice.

“The Summit was a huge success,” said Mollie Scott, Pharm.D., Regional Associate Dean for the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Asheville Campus. “It was a great opportunity for students to hear from national thought leaders on innovation in pharmacy practice.”
