The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is proud to announce the formation of the Eastern Advisory Board. The board is a select group of pharmacy alumni and partners whose mission is to advance recruitment, training, practice, research and service in Eastern North Carolina.

What is the Eastern Advisory Board?

The Eastern Advisory Board is comprised of thirteen health care professionals from Eastern North Carolina, representing pharmacy, medicine, nursing and dentistry.  The group’s first two meetings were in April and August.

“Over many decades, our School has demonstrated significant success in education, practice, and scholarship in Western North Carolina. Over the past year, we have seen growing opportunities for the school in Eastern North Carolina with several partners, including the  North Carolina Area Health Education Centers, community pharmacies, and health systems,” said Angela Kashuba, dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

Their Mission

One goal of the Eastern Advisory Board is to foster the growth of future North Carolina pharmacists. “This board brings an interprofessional focus to developing the pharmacists of tomorrow to better prepare them for working in often hard to reach, under resourced communities,” said board member Dr. Cherry Beasley. Beasley currently serves as the Associate Dean of the College of Health Sciences at UNC-Pembroke.

Thomas McDowell, PharmD, who is a UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy alumni and the owner of McDowell’s Pharmacy in Scotland Neck, North Carolina wants to ensure that UNC students know that they can practice at the top of your pharmacy license right here in Eastern North Carolina. “Our advisory board is working hard to make sure that we highlight and continue to enhance the pharmacy industry in the eastern part of our state so that students will always have opportunities here,” said McDowell.

“Through this work we are able to help each other grow ideas that may benefit others in our region,” said board member Ashley Abode, PharmD, a UNC Eshelman school of Pharmacy graduate and Clinical Service Coordinator for Realo Drugs, a regional chain serving Eastern NC. “Specifically, by working with Betsy, we have been able to gain access to an EHR (Electronic Health Record) for a major health system that services our area. It was because she had the connections we needed to push the issue. This is a great achievement that will help us serve the patients in this region.”
