UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy alumni Carl Taylor (’68) spent each day as a pharmacist serving patients in need and ensuring equal access to outstanding healthcare for all.

Carl passed away suddenly in September 2021, but his legacy of advancing pharmacy practice and always exhibiting kindness prevails. For those who didn’t have the honor of knowing Carl personally, he was a man of uncommon kindness, a dedicated pharmacist, lifelong learner, committed advocate for equal access to education and healthcare, and fervent fan of his beloved UNC.

For the past 20 years, Carl served as the Director of Pharmacy Services at Piedmont Health. He was also passionate about helping young people obtain the educational opportunities once provided to him. In doing so, he served as a clinical assistant professor in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, preparing pharmacy students for real world practice.

To honor his extraordinary life, Carl’s family along with Piedmont Health and Apexus have partnered with the School to establish the Carl Taylor Pharmacy Administration Scholarship.

As a fitting tribute to Carl, the scholarship will support students who plan to pursue a career in pharmacy education, demonstrate a commitment to serving rural or underserved communities, or enhance the social, economic and cultural diversity of the student body.

“Carl had a deep appreciation for pharmacy education and utilizing that education to improve the lives of patients in North Carolina and beyond. His legacy of advancing health care for all will now live on through the pharmacy students who receive the Carl Taylor Pharmacy Administration Scholarship,” said Angela Kashuba, dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.

Carl was the first in his family to attend college and sent himself to UNC’s School of Pharmacy. Following graduation, he founded the Carl D. Taylor Pharmacy, Inc. in 1979, and owned and operated two independent pharmacies in Gatesville, N.C., and Ahoskie, N.C., for more than 20 years.

Carl served on a myriad of boards, including the Hertford County School Board, the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Vestry, and the Roanoke Chowan Hospital Board. He also received numerous recognitions, including the North Carolina Hospital Association’s Trustee of the Year Award in 2000; and Hertford County’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Continue the Dream Award in 1999 in recognition of those whose community and life activities demonstrate a continuing pursuit of a more just society.
