Stefanie Ferreri, PharmD, CDE, a clinical assistant professor at the UNC School of Pharmacy, has been elected the chair of the Clinical/Pharmacotherapeutic Practice Section of the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management.

Ferreri’s tenure as section chair will last from March 2008 until March 2010. Her primary responsibilities will be to promote the professional practice interests of the APhA-APPM members, to establish programs and activities that serve the pharmacy practitioner, and to provide a means for members to participate in the APhA’s policy-making process.

Ferreri, who also directs the School’s Community Pharmacy Residency Program, says she ran for section chair so that she can contribute to something larger in pharmacy.

“APhA is located on Constitution Avenue in Washington, DC, and has a lot of political power when it comes to affecting policy and pharmacy,” she says. “Being part of a larger organization can allow us a voice as a profession to be heard. Right now pharmacy is going through many changes. Medication therapy management is an area where pharmacists can get paid for counseling and it does not have to be tied to a product. There are still many kinks in this system, and APhA can help iron those kinks.”

Macary Weck Marciniak, who obtained her doctor of pharmacy degree at the School, was elected member-at-large for the section.

The APhA-APPM is the academy for pharmacists involved in delivering or managing pharmaceutical services. Academy members practice in every pharmacy setting, including independent and chain community pharmacies, hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, health maintenance organizations, federal facilities, nuclear pharmacies, and other specialized settings.
