Henry Lewis Smith received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Pharmacy Alumni Association Thursday night in Chapel Hill.

Smith is the owner and president of Carolina Medical Products.  He received a chemistry degree from Campbell University in 1967 and a bachelor of science in pharmacy from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1972.

“Henry Smith is a credit to our School and our profession,” said Bob Blouin, dean of the UNC School of Pharmacy. “A pillar in his community, a leader in business and the pharmaceutical industry—he is the type of person we want our students to look to as an example.”

Carolina Medical Products employs thirty people at its 30,000-square-foot Farmville headquarters and another forty in national sales. The company manufactures fourteen prescription and over-the-counter medicines. Two more drugs are awaiting Food and Drug Administration approval. Smith was named Farmville Citizen of the Year in 1993 and is a past member of the Pitt County Economic Board.

Smith is also a member, officer, and executive committee member of the Pharmacy Foundation of North Carolina, Inc. He serves on the Campbell University School of Pharmacy Board of Visitors and received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Campbell in 1991.

He serves as a preceptor to fourth-year pharmacy students at both UNC-Chapel Hill and at Campbell. He is a member of the North Carolina Symphony’s Chairman’s Circle and is a benefactor of the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival at East Carolina University.

The PAA Distinguished Service Award is given to an alumnus or alumna of the UNC School of Pharmacy whose accomplishments and contributions have enhanced the School of Pharmacy and the profession of pharmacy at the local, state, national, or international level.
