When Brian Kurish attended the 2014 American College of Clinical Pharmacy’s annual meeting in Austin, Texas, as a second-year pharmacy student, he saw that the ACCP was a strong resource for involving students in clinical pharmacy. Now, as a rising third-year Pharm.D. student, Kurish will work with the ACCP from the inside as the 2015–2016 vice chair of the ACCP’s National Student Network Advisory Committee.

“We need students to be excited about clinical pharmacy,” Kurish said. “What matters most is the patient, and it has been shown time and time again that patients under the care of an interdisciplinary team of practitioners that include pharmacists have better outcomes across the board. The sooner students get involved in clinical pharmacy in school, the better they will be prepared to make a difference in their patients’ lives.”

The AACP National Student Network Advisory Committee increases student involvement in clinical pharmacy by developing new student programs. The committee is also responsible for publishing the ACCP student newsletter and maintaining the ACCP’s web presence.

“When applications for the committee opened in the spring, I knew that it was an opportunity that I had been waiting for,” Kurish says.

As vice chair, Kurish will oversee the publication of the newsletter, StuNews, which is published six times annually. Kurish will also work with this year’s chair to organize programing for the AACP Global Conference on Clinical Pharmacy held in San Francisco this October.

“My goal is to engage students across the country through the ACCP and ensure the organization offers the best opportunities it possibly can to pharmacy students interested in clinical pharmacy,” Kurish says.

Kurish will assume the position of chair next year.

As a student at the School, Kurish also acts as the president of the Triangle College of Clinical Pharmacy – Student Chapter and as the outreach coordinator for the Student Health Action Coalition. Kurish is actively involved in Phi Delta Chi, the honors program, the Carolina Association of Pharmacy Students, Phi Lambda Sigma, Rho Chi and the Peer Mentoring Program.
