This year Carolina sent its first-ever team to Minneapolis to compete in the national CLARION Interprofessional Team Case Competition held April 11–12. Shawnda Herring represented pharmacy, and Assistant Professor Kelly Scolaro, PharmD, served as the team’s faculty adviser.
Dean Nehama from the School of Medicine and Courtney Hill and Hilary Perrey from the Gillings School of Global Public Health comprised the rest of the students on the team.
CLARION is a University of Minnesota student organization dedicated to improving health care through interprofessional collaboration. The team case competition began as a UMinn exercise in 2002 and expanded to the national level in 2005. The competition gives graduate and professional health-care students an interprofessional teamwork experience.
Teams of four students composed of at least two disciplines are given several weeks to conduct a root-cause analysis surrounding a case based on a fictionalized sentinel event. At the end of the process, they present their findings and recommendations to a panel of judges representing leaders from various disciplines within the health-care industry.
This year the case was based on an Oregon patient with congestive heart failure. The team from the University of Washington won with the Medical University of South Carolina taking second and University of Cincinnati placing third.
