Three student-faculty teams have been named 2014 Walmart Scholars by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, marking the eighth consecutive year that the School has had at least one recipient for the award and the third consecutive year with three. This year’s recipients are
- PY4 Julie Carrington and her faculty mentor, Clinical Assistant Professor Kelly Scolaro, PharmD;
- PGY1 Community Pharmacy Resident Megan G. Smith, PharmD, and her faculty mentor, Clinical Assistant Professor Lisa Dinkins, PharmD; and
- Global Engagement Fellow David Steeb, PharmD, and his faculty mentor, Clinical Associate Professor Macary Marciniak, PharmD.
The Walmart Scholars Program aims to strengthen the award recipients’ skills and commitment to a career in academic pharmacy through their participation at the AACP Annual Meeting. Each student-faculty pair receives a $1,000 scholarship to help cover registration and travel costs for the annual meeting, along with the AACP Teachers Seminar to be held in Grapevine, Texas, July 26–30.
Carrington has finished her third year in the School’s doctor of pharmacy program where she served as a teaching assistant in the Pharmaceutical Care Labs and participated in the Honors Program. In her fourth year, she will be on rotation at UNC Hospitals.
Smith is a 2013–2014 PGY1 community pharmacy resident in PACE at Kerr Drug in Asheville. Smith received her doctor of pharmacy from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
Steeb is the first Global Engagement Fellow in the Office of Entrepreneurial Development and Global Engagement. He assists School faculty and students in pursuing international initiatives and partnerships. He also works to develop new leads and opportunities for international collaborations and partnerships to advance strategic objectives of the School. Steeb graduated from the School’s doctor of pharmacy program in May 2013.
