Two students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Cheryl Wisseh and Amber Bivins, took second place at the Regional Kroger Clinical Skills Competition in Atlanta February 20–22.

The Student National Pharmaceutical Association Kroger Regional Clinical Skills Competition is an opportunity for students from across the Southeast to showcase their pharmaceutical expertise.

Each of the twenty-four teams was judged based on their ability to counsel a hypothetical patient case.

The case Wisseh and Bivins were presented with was a nineteen-year-old college student who didn’t get much sleep, was dependent on caffeine pills, smoked cigarettes, and was picking up a new prescription for Yaz birth control and refilling an albuterol prescription.

“After analyzing the medication history, we gave a five-minute mock counseling session on the patient’s prescribed medication effects, medication interactions, and sleep habits,” says Wisseh, who is a third-year student at the School.

Judges only considered the counseling session for the competition, leaving little room for error.

“The time limit was unnerving, and we can honestly say that we were unsure of our status after completing the competition,” says Bivins, who is a second-year student. “We were very pleasantly surprised when our names were announced as the second place winners at the awards banquet.”

For Wisseh, the experience reaffirmed her confidence as a pharmacy student, she says.

“It was especially rewarding for me as a third-year student because I am very close to the application portion of the School’s curriculum,” Wisseh says. “This success has increased my belief in my ability to succeed with patients.”

Second place winners each received $250 in cash, a $170 Amazon gift card, and a $50 Kroger gift card.
