A unique holiday present was presented to the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum in Sedalia during its Annual Christmas Open House on December 11. Artist Jason Whitley, creative lead for instructional innovation at the School, donated a portrait of the museum’s namesake that he originally created for the Charlotte Observer for use in an African American history supplement in 2005. The newspaper granted Whitley permission to donate the portrait.

Charlotte Hawkins Brown founded the nationally renowned Palmer Institute in 1902 as a preparatory school for African American youth. The museum links Brown and the Palmer Memorial Institute to the themes of African American history, women’s history, education, and the contributions of African Americans in North Carolina. The Palmer Memorial Institute closed in 1971 and in 1987 became the state’s only North Carolina State Historic Site created to recognize a woman or African American, according to the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources.
