Susan Miller Recognized as AACP Master Preceptor

After almost twenty years of precepting pharmacy students, Susan Miller, PharmD, MBA, has been selected for the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Master Preceptor Recognition Program.

Miller is an associate professor of clinical education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and precepts students at her practice site at Cape Fear Valley Health System in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist and a fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy.

Since she began working for the School in 2004, Miller has precepted more than seventy-five students and coordinated more than 800 student clinical rotations for fourth-year pharmacy students assigned to her region.

“I have always been interested in teaching and mentoring others,” Miller says. “I get excited at the idea of helping others learn and become more confident in their skills.”

The AACP Master Preceptor Recognition Program recognizes preceptors who are not full-time employees of a pharmacy school but who have been critical in creating practice-ready pharmacists. AACP estimates that 82 percent of schools use faculty who are jointly‐funded by practice sites, and up to 60 percent of total advanced pharmacy practice experience rotations are provided by adjunct or volunteer faculty.

Miller will receive a $500 honorarium to attend additional preceptor training, a certificate of recognition, complimentary AACP membership, and national acknowledgment from the AACP and other pharmacy associations.

Miller says that an added benefit of the award is hearing from past students offering their congratulations.

“This is the best part, as I’m learning more about the paths their careers have taken and how our time together has helped shape their careers,” she says. “I am grateful to be honored with this extremely competitive award.”

Miller began precepting in 1998 after she graduated summa cum laude from Campbell University. Miller also acts as the pharmacy residency program director for the Cape Fear Valley Health System and precepts students for Creighton University and the University of Florida School of Pharmacy.
