The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has named the recipients of its 2008 preceptors and Area Health Education Center instructor of the year honors.

Jennifer Askew, CPP, manager of outpatient/employee pharmacy services for New Hanover Health Network in Wilmington, has been named a Hospital Pharmacy Preceptor of the Year.

Suzie Cala Harris, BCPP, a clinical pharmacy specialist in psychiatry at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, has been named AHEC Faculty Instructor of the Year.

Jane Wyatt Maney, owner of Jane’s Rx Drugs in Mars Hill, has been named Community Pharmacy Preceptor of the Year.

Allison Walls, PharmD, at hematology/oncology clinical specialist at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, has been named a Hospital Pharmacy Preceptor of the Year.

Preceptors and AHEC instructors are pharmacists who teach pharmacy students in real-world pharmacy practice, giving the students hands-on experience critical to their success as a pharmacist, says Bob Blouin, dean of the School.

“You cannot produce highly qualified pharmacists without strong preceptors and practice sites,” Blouin says. “Jennifer Askew, Suzie Harris, Jane Maney, and Allison Walls are some of our best. I can’t thank them enough for their service and the example they set.”

Preceptor of the year candidates are nominated by the students they teach.

Jennifer Askew
Askew has been a UNC pharmacy preceptor since 2006 and has precepted more than twenty UNC pharmacy students in introductory and advanced hospital, community, and practice management rotations. She received her doctor of pharmacy from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2003.

She is an active participant with the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at her institution and volunteers in the pharmacy at Tileston Outreach Health Center, a local free clinic, where she also serves on the board of directors and maintains a clinical practice in mental health.

Some of the students’ comments about Askew include

  • She gave me a great deal of insight and guidance about my career path and I hope she will continue to play a role in my development as a pharmacist after I graduate.
  • Dr. Askew is very motivated and is a great resource. She encourages students to be active life-long learners and is a great role model.
  • The most apparent strength of Dr. Askew as a preceptor is her innate ability to share her extensive knowledge and expertise by relating her experiences as a student, resident, and a professional.
  • Dr. Askew is very enthusiastic about the profession of pharmacy and equally enthusiastic about having students with her.

Suzie Cala Harris
Harris joined the school’s faculty in 2005 and has precepted more than twenty students on her psychiatry rotation at UNC Hospitals.

Some of the student’s comments about Askew include

  • She has shown us what it means to be a leader and has really inspired us to be the best pharmacists we can be.
  • She is one of the highlights of choosing the UNC Program. I hope that she continues in this role as her personality is well suited to the various demands of her students.
  • Suzie Cala Harris is an amazing AHEC faculty instructor.  She not only does her job as a clinical psychiatric pharmacist and teaching the psychiatric module, but she is also the director of the UNC CSP program, which entails organizing all of our meetings and seminars, finding rotations for all of us, not to mention screening all the applicants for the program, and still always finds time to get together with us personally, as well as joining us for dinner to check in at the end of each month to see how things are going. Suzie goes above and beyond her job as an AHEC faculty member and I have really appreciated everything she has done for me.
  • I was fortunate enough to spend a month with Suzie learning everything I could about psychiatry and after that month I decided to pursue a career as a clinical psychiatric pharmacist.

Jane Maney
Maney became a UNC pharmacy preceptor in 2006 and has precepted more than a dozen PharmD students at her independent community pharmacy. She offers both introductory and advanced community rotations.

She earned her BS in pharmacy from UNC in 1994. Maney was a pharmacist at CVS early in her career and then a pharmacy supervisor at Hot Springs Health Program. She bought Howard’s RX Drugs in 2001, which soon became Jane’s Rx Drugs. She is a member of the Madison County Board of Health.

Some of the students’ comments about Maney include

  • Jane is one of the most caring preceptors that I’ve had.  She truly cares for people. I have known Jane to organize a group of people to go help one of her patients with housework because the patient was unable to take care of these things herself.
  • She is an incredible role model and such an integral part of the community.  She has a wonderful business and her patients absolutely adore her.  Ever since I have known that wanted to be a pharmacist, Jane is who I have wanted to be.
  • It was especially rewarding to get the chance to give flu shots after being certified to do so last year. Jane was a great preceptor who allowed me to work independently while also helping when I had questions. Her unique practice allowed me to interact with patients frequently. It was a great rotation that I would highly recommend to other students.

Allison Walls
Walls has been a UNC pharmacy preceptor since 2005 and has precepted more than UNC pharmacy students on her oncology rotation at Carolinas Medical Center.

Some of the students’ comments about Walls include

  • Dr. Walls is a great role model and a brilliant pharmacist.  My understanding and knowledge of oncology greatly increased under her teaching.
  • By the end of the second week of the rotation I had become proficient enough to visit patients on my own.
  • Coming into the rotation I was completely scared of hematology/oncology. Now I feel pretty comfortable with this area of practice and may even pursue it further in the future.
  • Allison is a great teacher; she can simplify complex material to an easily understood level. She adapts quickly to changing assignments in the hospital while still taking time to educate me as to what she is doing. I feel very much included in most of her daily activities.
