Akinyemi Oni-Orisan, PharmD, was awarded the Best Resident and Fellow Poster Award from the American College of Clinical Pharmacy during the 2014 ACCP Annual Meeting in Austin, Texas.

Oni-Orisan is a PhD candidate in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, and his poster was competing against more than 400 other posters for the award. He received a plaque and a $350 gift card for winning the award.

Oni-Orisan’s poster was titled “Initial Characterization of Cytochrome P450-Derived Eicosanoids as a Predictive Biomarker in Coronary Artery Disease Using Metabolomics” and presented research on molecular indicators in the blood that could give clues to heart health.

“The particular project is one of the major focuses of my dissertation work since I started as a PhD student at UNC,” Oni-Orisan says.

The project is ongoing and Oni-Orisan says he hopes to submit a manuscript for publication in the near-future.

Oni-Orisan also investigates the function of eicosanoid molecules in the blood in an animal model of a heart attack. He says he hopes that this research will allow doctors to better diagnose and treat patients who suffer from coronary artery disease.

Oni-Orisan’s research is supported by an American Heart Association fellowship and the UNC Royster Society of Fellows. Oni-Orisan has been working in collaboration with former graduate students, members in the UNC School of Medicine, and members at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in Research Triangle Park, all of whom are listed as coauthors of the poster.
