Jena Ivey Burkhart, PharmD

Jena Ivey Burkhart, PharmD, has been awarded the 2014 Dale Jones Memorial Award for Excellence in Geriatrics from the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists.

Burkhart received the award from the NCAP Chronic Care Forum in recognition of her extensive efforts to promote quality patient care in the elderly population. She is a geriatric clinical pharmacy specialist and director of the geriatric pharmacy specialty residency program at UNC Hospitals. She is an assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education and clinical assistant professor in the Division of Geriatrics at the UNC School of Medicine.

Burkhart has been at UNC-Chapel Hill since 2005. She joined the School as a clinical instructor after earning her PharmD and completing a geriatric pharmacy specialty residency here. Burkhart teaches in both the didactic and experiential settings at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her clinical practice includes working in the UNC Division of Geriatric Medicine’s Interdisciplinary Geriatric Specialty Clinic, in a local continuing-care retirement community, and in the community where she offers medication management services to older adults in their home and at a local senior center.

Burkhart is actively involved in research and has served as the lead study pharmacist on various federally funded grants to improve the quality of medication use in older adults. Her other academic interests include interdisciplinary training and teamwork building among members of the health-care team.
