Akinyemi Oni-Orisan, PharmD, a doctoral student at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, received a two-year predoctoral fellowship from the American Heart Association.

The fellowship will provide $25,000 a year to support Oni-Orisan’s research, which integrates both animal and human studies to investigate the potential of a new therapeutic strategy to reduce poor outcomes following a heart attack and to determine if there are certain heart-attack patients who might be more likely to benefit from that therapeutic strategy.

“This project promotes personalized medicine and pharmacogenomics in cardiovascular drug development by helping lay the foundation for future prospective studies that take an individualized approach to therapy,” Oni-Orisan says.

Oni-Orisan joined the PhD program in the School’s Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics in fall 2010. He is completing his training in the lab of associate professor Craig Lee, PharmD, PhD. Before coming to UNC-Chapel Hill, Oni-Orisan earned his bachelor’s in biology and his doctor of pharmacy at the University of Michigan.
