Anthony Emekalam, PharmD, a clinical assistant professor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, has been selected as a Jim Bernstein Community Health Leadership Fellow.

Emekalam will receive a two-year fellowship with at least $3,000 in funding. The fellowship program aims to develop future leaders to work in and improve the health of rural and other underserved communities and populations in North Carolina. The fellowships are individually tailored to work in concert with the fellow’s current work. Fellows are paired with mentors and will interact with health care leaders and work with various state agencies, university programs, nonprofit organizations, and innovative initiatives aimed at improving access to and quality of health care.

Emekalam works at Elizabeth City State University as part of the UNC-ECSU Pharmacy Partnership Program, which enrolls ten to fifteen students in the UNC doctor of pharmacy program each year. These students are based at the ECSU campus, taking classes from the ECSU faculty and from the UNC-Chapel Hill faculty via video teleconferencing.

Emekalam also is the director of the ECSU Health Resource Center, a health disparities initiative that is supported by a grant from the North Carolina Health and Wellness trust fund. His work focuses on reducing the onset and progression of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in individuals at risk through modification of lifestyle, disease screening, and management. He works with local organizations and businesses to create awareness about risk factors, health education, and wellness.

“I applied for the fellowship because the work that I am currently engaged in is in line with the goals and aspirations of the fellowship,” Emekalam says. “Moreover, the fellowship will provide networking opportunities and help in the development of community healthcare models that could be promoted across the entire state.”
