Brad Wingo
Brad Wingo, MEd

Brad Wingo, MEd, is the recipient of the first Phyllis Smith Staff Award for Excellence given by the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Wingo is the School’s director of student affairs.

Wingo came to the School in 2011 from North Carolina State University. There he directed the Student Success and Advising Center and coordinated advising for the College of Education from 2008 to 2011. Prior to that, he was the director of Student Support Center at North Carolina Wesleyan College for five years.

The award recognizes a staff member who is committed to the School’s pursuit of excellence through its business practices. The winner should demonstrate leadership, be an effective team member, have a positive attitude, and be enthusiastic. The following are some examples of what those nominating Wingo for the award had to say about him:

  • “Brad has done a great job with revamping our student-advising process and new-student orientation program and providing oversight and building professional relationships with students through a high level of engagement with student organizations.”
  • “He continually goes above and beyond at his job and truly strives to make this school at better place for students.”
  • “Brad always displays a positive, can-do attitude. I cannot think of anyone who is more deserving than Brad Wingo.”
  • “He effectively brings key stakeholders to the table when working on a project and represents the ideals of Vince Lombardi who said, ‘Isn’t it great how much we can accomplish when no one cares who gets the credit?”

The $500 award honors the career of Phyllis Smith, the School’s director of facilities, who will retire in 2014 after more than thirty years of service. Smith joined the School in 1983 as the School’s receptionist. By the early 1990s, she was also assisting the business manager.

During the construction of Kerr Hall around the turn of the millennium, Smith’s position put her on the front lines dealing with needs and schedules of all the different contractors involved in the project. Kerr Hall was the School’s first major construction project since Beard was completed in 1959, and the needs of the construction crews caught everyone by surprise. A new role of facilities manager was spun out of the business manager’s office, and Smith stepped in to fill that new position.
