Ben Urick, Pharm.D., Ph.D.

Research Assistant Professor

Ben Urick, Pharm.D., Ph.D., is a research assistant professor at the Center for Medication Optimization through Practice and Policy in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Excellence. His research lies at the intersection of pharmacy practice, healthcare and health policy.

He is particularly interested in the role of community pharmacists in the evolving healthcare system. His dissertation work developed a system of metrics to assess the value community pharmacists provide a commercial insurer. Ben is currently working with Community Care of North Carolina on a federally funded project to evaluate the impact of a community pharmacy enhanced services network on healthcare quality and resource use among Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. This research could lead to broader implementation of value-based payment models which incentivize community pharmacists to provide higher quality care and reduce healthcare spending.

Urick received his Pharm.D. from Drake University in 2011 and worked at CVS/Pharmacy and Nucara Pharmacy. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 2016. He is a member of the American Pharmacists Association, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the American Institute for the History of Pharmacy, and the International Pharmaceutical Federation.
