The School was well-represented at the 2017 SNPhA Regions I and II Conference.

Students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy chapter of the Student National Pharmaceutical Association had a good showing at the 2017 SNPhA Regions I and II Conference held at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, March 17-19.

PY2 Roderick Gladney from Thomasville, North Carolina, and PY2 Nakiya Whitfield from Spring Lake, North Carolina, placed second in the clinical skills competition. PY2 Alyssa Morgan from Durham, North Carolina, and PY2 Dena Evans from Greensboro, North Carolina, received honorable mention in the clinical skills competition and placed second in the poster competition.

Additionally, the Regional Conference Host Committee, led by Gladney and PY2 Patrick Kurunwune from Austin, Texas, put together a winning proposal for 2018, which means the School will host the 2018 SNPhA Region I and II Conference.

“The entire chapter could not be prouder of what these students have accomplished at the regional conference,” said PY3 Kelly Hu, the president of the UNC SNPhA chapter. “Their success reflects SNPhA’s dedication to serving the underserved through an array of outreach and education initiatives, as well as self-improvement through volunteering, chapter-sponsored pharmacotherapy review sessions and clinical skills.”

Michael Jay, Ph.D., the Fred Eshelman Distinguished Professor of Molecular Pharmaceutics and chair of the Division of Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics, said the School’s SNPhA chapter has experienced enormous growth over the past few years in both membership and reputation in the local communities and the national organization.

“I attribute this to the strong leadership of our student chapter and the passion of the committee chairs and members,” said Jay, who is one of the chapter’s faculty advisers. “Anyone who could see this group in action at any of their events would come away very impressed with their commitment to service and their compassion for those among us who most need their help.”
