Michael Plazak, Felicia Charles, Kaitlin Rzasa and Carson Tester display the 2015 Phi Delta Chi Grabenstein Leadership Award and the Saroyan Brotherhood Award.

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Alpha Gamma Chapter of Phi Delta Chi won the John D. Grabenstein Leadership Award and the Ralph L. Saroyan Brotherhood Award during the Phi Delta Chi Grand Council annual awards banquet held August 8 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The fraternity was also recognized as the second overall chapter in the nation.

“Our chapter is ecstatic to receive these national honors,” said PY2 Michael Plazak, worthy chief counselor of the Alpha Gamma Chapter. “Five years ago, Dr. David Steeb and other student pharmacists saw an opportunity to recolonize the Alpha Gamma Chapter of Phi Delta Chi and focus on the ideals of brotherhood and leadership. We truly are so proud of how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time.”

Marcary Marciniak, Pharm.D., and David Steeb, Pharm.D., serve as faculty advisers for the Alpha Gamma Chapter.

First in Leadership

The John D. Grabenstein Leadership Award recognizes chapters with the most effective leadership-development programs and leadership positions held throughout their respective pharmacy schools.

Each semester, the School’s Phi Delta Chi chapter holds two leadership breakfasts where local pharmacists from the Research Triangle Park, UNC Hospitals and the School gather to offer advice to fraternity members on navigating the professional world.

The chapter also has a leadership panel consisting of 10 brothers that provides helpful hints to first-year members to help them successfully advance in pharmacy.

Eight brothers also hold dual positions in the School’s Phi Lambda Sigma pharmacy leadership society, and 56 brothers hold leadership positions within the School.

First in Brotherhood

The Ralph L. Saroyan Brotherhood Award recognizes chapters that promote brotherhood within their chapter.

Each year, the School’s Phi Delta Chi chapter holds a brotherhood retreat in Boone, North Carolina, where members participate in team-building activities and prepare for the school year. The chapter holds a cabin trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, each January and coordinates trips to a local trampoline park, Carolina Hurricane hockey games and UNC baseball games.

The chapter also hosts a school-wide volleyball tournament and a formal and semiformal each year.
