Three PharmD students at the UNC School of Pharmacy and their faculty mentors have been chosen to receive Walmart Student/Faculty Annual Conference Scholarships.

The recipients are: Ashley Gunter, a fourth-year student and her faculty mentor, Clinical Associate Professor Susan Miller, PharmD, MBA, BCPS; LaQuoia Johnson (PY3) and Clinical Assistant Professor Huyla Coker, PharmD; and Brian Murray (PY2) and Clinical Assistant Professor Adam Persky, PhD.

Sponsored by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and Wal-Mart, the scholarship will provide each student/faculty pair $1,000 to help cover expenses for attending the AACP Annual Meeting and the AACP Teachers Seminar in Chicago, Illinois, on July 19-23.

The goal of the scholarship program is to strengthen the student recipients’ skills and commitment to a career in academic pharmacy through their participation at the AACP Annual Meeting and Seminars. Applicants must be enrolled in a professional pharmacy degree program or graduate program at an AACP member institution, have a strong interest in enhancing their preparation for a career in academic pharmacy, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, and be a United States citizen or permanent resident.

The scholarships are awarded based on the students’ transcripts and statements of career goals, as well as the faculty mentors’ description of the students’ qualifications and capacity to succeed in the program. Fifty scholarships were awarded in 2008, and the recipients will be recognized at the AACP Annual Meeting.
