Gary Pollack, Ph.D., has been appointed as the first executive associate dean for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy.

“I am delighted that Dr. Pollack has agreed to accept this important position within the School of Pharmacy,” said Robert Blouin, dean of the School. “Dr. Pollack has been a distinguished scientist and educator at the School for over 20 years, and his exceptional leadership skills will contribute greatly to the future success of the School.”

As executive associate dean, Pollack will oversee all aspects of the School’s operations and will represent the dean in various capacities. He will supervise the School’s business, communications and human resources departments and will be responsible for managing the School’s use of information technology.

“I have been fortunate to be associated with one of the country’s premiere schools of pharmacy for more than 20 years,” said Pollack. “We are anticipating an unprecedented period of growth and development in our professional education, graduate and research programs. I am looking forward to helping the school to implement and manage that growth while retaining the level of excellence in teaching and scholarship that has been associated with the UNC School of Pharmacy.”

Pollack received his B.A. in chemistry and psychology from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and his Ph.D. in pharmaceutics, with a concentration in pharmacokinetics, from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He joined the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy in 1984 and served as chair of the School’s Division of Drug Delivery and Disposition from 1992 to 2004. Currently, Pollack is a professor in the division of Drug Delivery and Disposition and in the UNC Curriculum in Toxicology.

Pollack has mentored more than 40 graduate, undergraduate and postdoctoral students in his laboratory and has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, book chapters and scientific abstracts. He is a fellow of both the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and is associate editor of the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Pollack’s research is centered on the disposition and action of drugs and toxicants in the central nervous system.
