The Model Minority – History, Myths, and Lived Experiences

May 10, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 12:50 pm

Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and bring awareness to the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans in pharmacy and healthcare

In 1966, Asian Americans were labeled the “model minority”: law-abiding, economically successful, and assimilating. This image of Asian Americans has deep historical and policy roots. Today, the idea still strongly persists, furthering racial division and concealing the diverse backgrounds and needs of Asian Americans.

Prof. Heidi Kim will outline the history of the term and how this damaging stereotype of Asian America has been maintained up to the present day. Drs. Suzanne Harris and Kamakshi Rao will join to discuss the impact of the model minority myth on Asian American health and share their own professional experiences. Participants are encouraged to engage in Q&A.
