Join CIPhER for “Graduate Education at UNC: Use and Format of Dissertation Committees.” This online webinar will be held online Friday, April 21, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
Description: Dissertation committees serve a vital role within graduate education. Members of a student’s dissertation committee serve multiple roles, including serving in a mentoring capacity, offering constructive feedback on the student’s research and writing, guiding revision efforts, supervising the student’s dissertation work, and, ultimately, determining the acceptability of the dissertation. While these roles may be universally accepted across graduate education, experiences across programs may differ in how dissertation committees are constructed and used within the program and how conflicts are managed. During this program, panelists from across the University will share their experiences with the use of dissertation committees within their PhD programs through open discussion.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the program, participants will be able to

Discuss potential modifications to practices relating to the use of dissertation committees within the PhD program
Target Audience: This program is designed for Division Directors, faculty, staff, preceptors, and fellows who support graduate education.
