This fellowship is sponsored in collaboration with United Therapeutics and is part of the DPET fellowship program.

  • Length: One year

United Therapeutics and the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy (ESOP), Division of Pharmacotherapy & Experimental Therapeutics and the UNC Healthcare Department of Pharmacy are pleased to announce a new pharmaceutical industry-based fellowship in Medical Affairs and Medical Information. This is a 1-year fellowship. During the first six months, the fellow will spend dedicated time with the UNC Healthcare Pharmacy Department Drug Information Services and United Therapeutics Medical Affairs/ Medical information Department. During the second six-month period, the fellow will work with United Therapeutics Medical Affairs/ Medical Information. During the year, the fellow will also participate in the ESOP fellowship program activities.

Overall Goals

To provide post-graduate experience and training in:

  • A Drug Information center in the clinical setting.
  • Medical information best practice in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Delivering seminars and scholarly presentations.
  • Analyzing data and applying to clinical practice.
  • Cross-functional collaboration.
  • Principles and applications of pharmaceutical product development and evaluation, research design and methodology.


Broad Objectives

At the completion of the Program, the Fellow will be able to:

  • Respond to requests for information.
  • Perform the role of a drug information pharmacist.
  • Perform the day-to-day operations of a Medical Information Scientist.
  • Describe the purpose of Medical Affairs as a function of the entire company.
  • Understand the drug lifecycle and the necessary steps to bring a compound to market.
  • Develop standard response documents.
  • Gain clinical knowledge and therapeutic expertise of a rare disease.
  • Understand FDA and Compliance implications of Medical Information.

 

Specific Learning Objectives

At the completion of the Program, the Fellow will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of the Request For Information process.
  • Understand the principles of responding to unsolicited requests for off-label information. Triage, record and file requests for information.
  • Develop and write standard response documents.
  • Develop and update product Dossiers.
  • Authorship on publications, abstracts or posters.
  • Generating and delivering insights to key stakeholders.
  • Identify data gaps as it relates to marketed products.
  • Evaluation and maintenance of applicable Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Work with Global Product Safety and Pharmacovigilance to report adverse events.
  • Layered learning through precepting summer interns.
  • Participate in the Expanded Access Program.
  • Slide deck development on disease states, use of devices and adverse event management.
  • Understand the function of and collaborate with other areas of Medical Affairs such as Medical Communications, Health Economics and Outcomes and Medical Science Liaisons.
  • Support Global Medical Affairs with other activities as needed.
  • Support formulary drug requests via critical reviews of clinical evidence, safety, cost/value, operations analysis
  • Perform medication use evaluations
  • Understand evidence-based medicine and drug trial principles
  • Gain precepting experience of other learners
  • Adjudicate patient-specific non-formulary drug requests
  • Present at interdisciplinary meetings
  • Gain involvement in clinical research and/or quality improvement products
