GlaxoSmithKline Medical Affairs Fellowship

The US Medical Affairs fellowship at GlaxoSmithKline allows fellows to explore and understand all phases of research design and methodology, including the development and execution of research protocols in the clinical investigation of drug therapies and the broad remit and responsibilities of the Medical Affairs group. The ultimate goal of the fellowship is to provide the skills and experience necessary to launch a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry.

Fellows will engage in coursework, seminars, meetings and hands-on projects to gain a complete understanding of the drug development process, from hypothesis generation to study conduct and data analysis, as well as presentation and publication of study findings. Fellows will be exposed to the process of generating evidence, engaging externally, developing an understanding of the data generated to support medical claims, and collaborating across functional areas.

Program Description

The fellowship is designed to include two 12-month rotations, providing the opportunity to work in both an academic and pharmaceutical industry setting. Fellows will spend approximately 12 months at UNC and 12 months at GSK. Each Fellow may make periodic visits to either location throughout training. In addition, there may be opportunities to gain experience through rotations in Health Outcomes, Medical Information, Global Clinical Safety and Pharmacovigilance, and Regulatory. Aspects of the rotations may be combined or overlap in order to maximize project and training experiences.

Fellows will be supervised by UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy faculty while at the university, and by research scientists from one or more clinical therapeutic areas within US Medical Affairs, Pharmaceutical Research & Development, or the Office of the Chief Medical Officer while on rotation at GSK.

The fellowship will provide postgraduate didactic training to teach Fellows to

• Understand and apply various clinical trial design strategies
• Develop protocols, obtain appropriate approvals, recruit and monitor patients or subjects, collect and analyze data, and prepare a manuscript from the academic perspective
• Understand principles of clinical research, including important concepts of Good Clinical Practice
• Manage and analyze data and summarize findings for presentation and/or publication
• Work closely with US Medical Affairs Leads and Accountable Medical Leads to execute tactics that support the overall medical strategy
• Support launch preparations for new medicines and/or new indications or label extensions
• Conduct strategic reviews of the medical literature and the competitive environment to identify data and educational gaps to enhance patient care
• Gain an understanding of the laws, regulations and policies required to ensure appropriate interactions with the health care professionals
• Participate in medical content development and review and communication of scientific information for internal and field based colleagues
• Participate in medical review of promotional materials
• Review draft response letters and Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) dossiers to ensure responses to medical inquiries are scientifically balanced
• Assist in the preparation of regulatory documents e.g., NDA annual reports, label updates.
