Alumni in China Find UNC Community through Carolina China Club

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy has a global alumni network — and UNC’s alumni presence is particularly strong in China. The Carolina China Club, UNC’s alumni association in China, has over 500 members across UNC’s various schools, about one-fifth of whom are health sciences alumni. The club hosts events ranging from lectures to UNC basketball watch parties. Members of the club’s health sciences group met with Stephen Eckel, Pharm.D., M.H.A., and Ashley Qi, M.B.A., during their visit to Beijing last November. Students Make International Impact through GPS Ethiopia Program

Until recently, cancer patients at Tikur Anbessa Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia were unable to receive chemotherapy involving high doses of methotrexate — a treatment commonly used for a wide variety of cancers. High-dose methotrexate treatment requires involvement from clinical pharmacists, who guard against severe toxicities. Clinical pharmacists at Tikur Anbessa had neither the protocol nor the training. But when two PY4 students and a PGY2 resident from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy visited the hospital in 2017, they noticed the limitation and worked with Tikur Anbessa to develop a training program so the hospital’s pharmacists could begin administering … Read more


Pharm.D. Students Receive PharmAlliance Grant for Medication Safety Project

A group of Pharm.D. students received a $10,000 PharmAlliance grant — the first of its kind to be awarded to Pharm.D. students — to support a project promoting medication safety. The project is led by PY3 Clara Kim and PY2 Vraj Patel from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. It is co-authored by PY3 Ember Lu from the School and students from University College London and Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. In First-of-Its-Kind Partnership, China Scholarship Council Sends Three Pharm.D. Students to UNC

Three Pharm.D. students from China began classes at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy this September, thanks to a first-of-its-kind scholarship partnership. The students are supported financially by the China Scholarship Council, which signed a five-year agreement with the School last year. The partnership is the first the CSC has had with any pharmacy school. Feiyun Ma, Xiaorui Fu and Lirong Yang are the first of as many as 35 Pharm.D. students who can earn scholarships from CSC to attend the School over the next five years. ITPS Program Connects Chinese Students with UNC Pharmacy

Thirty-six undergraduate pharmacy students from China concluded a four-week survey course at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy on August 10. The Innovations and Transformations in Pharmaceutical Sciences program gave UNC graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty members the opportunity to teach and interact with the Chinese students. The ITPS program is in its first year. It is directed by Associate Dean for Global Engagement Stephen Eckel, Pharm.D., M.H.A.; Associate Professor Michael Jarstfer, Ph.D.; and Global Program Officer Terry Kale, M.P.A.
