Kappa Epsilon Honors UNC Faculty, Chapter

Kappa Epsilon honored two UNC School of Pharmacy faculty members and the UNC Lambda chapter at the fraternity’s 46th annual national convention on July 25-29 in Charlotte. Jennifer Stegall-Zanation, PharmD, a clinical assistant professor in the Office of Professional Education, was recognized for her contributions as convention chair. Jo Ellen Rodgers, PharmD, a clinical assistant professor in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics, received the Unicorn Award, which recognizes Kappa Epsilon alumni members’ sustained service to the organization. Craig Lee Receives Grant from American Heart Association

Craig Lee, PhD, an assistant professor at the UNC School of Pharmacy, has received a $132,000 beginning grant-in-aid from the American Heart Association. Lee will use the two-year grant, titled “P450 Epoxygenase Pathway and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease”, to study the relationship between genetic variation in the cytochrome P450 epoxygenase pathway and mechanisms underlying the risk of cardiovascular disease. Cytochromes P450 are a metabolic enzyme family present throughout the body. The pathway Lee is studying is active in the cardiovascular system and forms epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (also known as EETs), which dilate blood vessels and have anti-inflammatory effects. NIH Funds Paine’s Search for a Cranberry Juice Effect

Mary Paine, PhD, has been awarded a $300,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to explore interactions between foods and drugs. “We know a great deal about drug-drug interactions but comparatively little about how foods and other natural products interact with drugs,” Paine says. “Typically, the only thing patients are told about food and their medicine is whether or not they should take their pills with a meal.” Paine is interested in foods that can contribute to what has come to be called “the grapefruit juice effect.” Since the early 1990s, researchers have known that chemical compounds in grapefruit … Read more


Nanomedicine Expert Russell Mumper Joins School Faculty

Russell Mumper, PhD, an internationally recognized leader in the pharmaceutical applications of nanotechnology, has joined the UNC School of Pharmacy as the John A. McNeill Distinguished Professor. Mumper, an expert in vaccine and cancer drug delivery systems, will serve as the director of the School’s new Center for Nanotechnology in Drug Delivery. The CNDD is part of a larger nanomedicine initiative at UNC that bridges disciplines in medicine, chemistry, and pharmacy. DPET Recognizes Long-Time Faculty

The Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics honored two faculty members at the Division’s annual retreat in June. Associate Professor Ralph Raasch, PharmD, was recognized for thirty years of outstanding service to the division and the field of pharmacy. Associate Professor Wayne Pittman, MS, also a clinical associate professor of medicine, was recognized for thirty-five years of exemplary service and leadership in pharmacy.


Kashuba, Corbett Honored for Work in Fight against AIDS

Sleath Survey: New Mothers Often Not Asked about Depression

The majority of doctors in North Carolina are unlikely to probe for signs of postpartum depression in new mothers, according to a survey conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Of the 228 physicians responding to the survey who said they had seen women for postpartum visits in the previous three months, 79 percent said they were unlikely to formally screen the patients for depression. White Harris Is School’s New Director of Recruitment, Diversity

Carla White Harris has been named the new director of recruitment and diversity initiatives at the UNC School of Pharmacy. She is also the new Chapel Hill–based director of the UNC/ECSU PharmD Partnership Program. It will be her responsibility to develop and execute a student-recruitment plan for the doctor of pharmacy program with the long-term goal of enhancing the quality and the diversity of students applying to the School of Pharmacy. Hansen, Roth Co-Investigators on Grant

Two professors from the UNC School of Pharmacy’s Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy are co-investigators on a one-year, $140,000 grant from the School of Medicine’s “Investments for the Future” Project. Richard Hansen, PhD, and Mary Roth, PharmD, MHS, will be part of a project that aims to enlist pharmacist intervention to reduce drug therapy problems, such as incorrect usage, in older psychiatric patients.
