Regional associate dean honored with APhA Bowl of Hygeia Award for community service

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) has named Mollie Ashe Scott, Pharm.D., as a recipient of this year’s Bowl of Hygeia Award. Established in 1958, the Bowl of Hygeia Award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership and encourage their fellow pharmacists to be active in their local communities. Asheville Campus associate professor champions for older adults in Western North Carolina

And it also lacks a center of excellence to comprehensively address the clinical and social challenges that older adults face in the region, said Tasha Woodall, Pharm.D. “If we don’t step in to fill this void and help our older adults age according to their wishes, then who will?” Woodall said. Students collaborate in Western NC to help communities through COVID-19 crisis

UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy students teamed up with UNC medical and public health students to make a difference in the lives of Western North Carolina residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, the students completed an interprofessional rotation in Western North Carolina called the “Rural Interprofessional Response to COVID-19.” Four Pharm.D. students, five medical students and nine public health students were placed into teams and worked on real-world problems as it pertained to meeting the needs of communities that were vulnerable to negative outcomes during the health crisis. Geriatric pharmacy residency program receives ASHP accreditation

The Geriatric Pharmacy PGY2 residency program, a collaboration between the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC), is now officially accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The purpose of the PGY2 Geriatric Pharmacy Residency, based in western North Carolina, is to prepare geriatric pharmacotherapy specialists who have mastered the skills necessary to care for the aging population and are equipped to lead change in medical and academic communities. Asheville faculty wins national career achievement award after student nomination

One of Charlene Williams’ favorite things about her job is working with students. “I enjoy mentoring students to help them find their own path…and trying to match their interests with their strengths,” she said. Grandy Receives Bernstein Fellowship for Hepatitis C Research

Rebecca Grandy, Pharm.D., was named a Jim Bernstein Community Health Leadership Fellow for her work providing hepatitis C care in rural communities. Grandy is an assistant professor of clinical education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Asheville satellite campus and practices at the Mountain Area Health Education Center’s Family Health Center. The Bernstein Fellows Program identifies and develops future healthcare in rural and underserved communities in North Carolina. New Study Shows Cost Effectiveness of Early Screenings for High-Risk Cancer Patients

New research from the University of Utah and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill shows how early cancer screening and surveillance in patients with Li-Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS) results in additional years of life and is cost effective for third-party payers. LFS is an inherited genetic condition that greatly increases the risk of developing several types of cancer. People diagnosed with LFS have a one in two chance of developing cancer by 30, and a nearly 100 percent risk of developing cancer in their lifetime, compared to the lifetime cancer risk of the average person of almost 40 percent. Former Dean Robert Blouin’s Official Portrait Unveiled

Robert Blouin, Pharm.D., who for 14 years served as dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, was honored Nov. 30 with the unveiling of his official portrait. Blouin served as dean from 2003 to 2017. The Mountain Area Health Education Center and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have partnered for the construction of a new academic health center building on MAHEC’s Biltmore campus in Asheville.
