Two Asheville-based students named NC AHEC scholars

UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Asheville-based Pharm.D. students Haley Simkins and Brandyn Wilcox have been named North Carolina Area Health Education Centers (NC AHEC) Scholars. Geriatric pharmacy residency program receives ASHP accreditation

The Geriatric Pharmacy PGY2 residency program, a collaboration between the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, and the Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC), is now officially accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The purpose of the PGY2 Geriatric Pharmacy Residency, based in western North Carolina, is to prepare geriatric pharmacotherapy specialists who have mastered the skills necessary to care for the aging population and are equipped to lead change in medical and academic communities. Josh Guffey Named Director of Office of Continuing Education

Josh Guffey, Pharm.D., has been named director of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Office of Continuing Education. Guffey is currently the director of pharmacy education at the Charlotte Area Health Education Center/Carolinas Medical Center, where he has extensive experience in pharmacy education and continuing education. He also holds a faculty appointment in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education. Grandy Receives Bernstein Fellowship for Hepatitis C Research

Rebecca Grandy, Pharm.D., was named a Jim Bernstein Community Health Leadership Fellow for her work providing hepatitis C care in rural communities. Grandy is an assistant professor of clinical education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Asheville satellite campus and practices at the Mountain Area Health Education Center’s Family Health Center. The Bernstein Fellows Program identifies and develops future healthcare in rural and underserved communities in North Carolina. MAHEC, UNC-Chapel Hill Celebrate New Interprofessional Academic Health Center

The Mountain Area Health Education Center and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have partnered for the construction of a new academic health center building on MAHEC’s Biltmore campus in Asheville. Grandy Receives NCAP Excellence in Innovation Award

Rebecca Grandy, Pharm.D., is the recipient of the 2018 Excellence in Innovation Award from the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists for her work providing hepatitis C care in rural communities. Grandy is an assistant professor of clinical education at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Asheville satellite campus and practices at the Mountain Area Health Education Center’s Family Health Center. Gal, Koval Receive Grants for Second Life Projects

Peter Gal, PharmD, and Pete Koval, PharmD, faculty members in the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education, have received Lenovo Innovation Grants from the UNC Center for Faculty Excellence to develop projects in Second Life to help students in real life. Gal, a clinical professor, will use his $9,900 grant to create an orientation program on the virtual-reality social network to familiarize fourth-year doctor of pharmacy students with clinical practice in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) before they begin that portion of their practice-experience curriculum. Koval, Thrasher Named to Specialty Council

Two clinical associate professors at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy will serve on a new Board of Pharmaceutical Specialties council to develop a certification for ambulatory-care pharmacy specialists. Peter Koval, PharmD, and Kim Thrasher, PharmD, are both board certified pharmacotherapy specialists and faculty members in the School’s Division of Pharmacy Practice and Experiential Education.
