UNC’s Phi Delta Chi Raises Over $14,000 for St. Jude, Most in Country

The UNC chapter of the co-ed pharmacy fraternity Phi Delta Chi raised more money for philanthropy than any other chapter in the country. The Alpha Gamma chapter from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy raised $14,048.12 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital during the 2017-18 academic year. The chapter was honored by the national Phi Delta Chi organization at its annual Leader-Development Seminar, held in Virginia Beach from Aug. 1-4. Pharm.D. Students Advocate for Pharmacy Profession in Washington

Four students from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy were among the 240 student pharmacists advocating for pharmacist provider status in Washington, D.C. UNC Pharm.D. students Karin Abernathy, Jennifer Sato, Jennifer Schweiger and Sarah Steinert attended the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists Summer Leadership Institute, held from July 13–15 in Washington, D.C. UNC AAPS Chapter Receives National Award

The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists awarded the 2018 AAPS Student Chapter award to students at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. The award, which comes with a $1,000 prize, recognizes student AAPS chapters that have provided exceptional service and outreach over the course of the year. UNC Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences Fifth in World: Shanghai Rankings

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranks fifth in the world in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, up one spot from last year, according to the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities released by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, in conjunction with the Center for World Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University on August 15. The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is the top-ranked pharmacy school in the United States, according to U.S. News & World Report. Eckel Receives Duke’s Skolaut Leadership Award

Stephen F. Eckel, Pharm.D., M.H.A., received the Milton W. Skolaut Leadership Award from the Duke University Department of Pharmacy on June 29. The award is given annually to a past resident of the Duke University Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program in recognition of outstanding leadership and contributions to the profession of pharmacy. The Duke residency program has graduated 240 residents as of 2018. Seven 2018 Residents Begin PGY1 Independent Pharmacy Ownership Residency

The PGY1 Independent Pharmacy Ownership Residency at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy welcomed its third class of residents for 2018–19. The program trains Doctor of Pharmacy graduates to be owners of independent community pharmacies. The residents receive a practical business education to complement their pharmacy education. Seven pharmacy residents will participate in the program, up from four a year ago. GPS Program Brings London Student to UNC for Research Experience

Li Xian Ng, a student at the University College London School of Pharmacy, came to the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy for a three-month research rotation as part of the School’s Global Pharmacy Scholars program. The exchange program allows students from UCL to travel to North Carolina to work with professors at the School and sends UNC pharmacy students to London for research there. Ng worked in the lab of Gauri Rao, Pharm.D., M.S., studying pharmacokinetic modeling and antibiotic dose optimization. Olivia Dong, a doctoral candidate in the Division of Pharmacotherapy and Experimental Therapeutics at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, is the recipient of a $15,000 Scholar Award from the International Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for the 2018-19 academic year. Dong is one of the 100 recipients out of 741 nominees selected to receive a P.E.O Scholar Award, which provides merit-based funding for women in the United States and Canada who are pursuing a doctoral-level degree at an accredited college or university. AMCP Chapter Wins Second Straight National P&T Competition

For the second consecutive year, students in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy won first place in the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy Foundation’s National Student Pharmacist Pharmacy and Therapeutics Competition. Members of the UNC chapter of AMCP took home the top prize in a field of 46 pharmacy schools, topping seven other teams in the finals in Boston on April 26. Pharmacy Administration Master’s Residents Receive ASHP Grants

Pharmacy residents from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy received two of three national grants awarded by the ASHP Foundation. Stephanie Jean, Pharm.D., and Charlotte Wells, Pharm.D., two UNC Medical Center pharmacy administration residents in the School’s master’s degree program, both won the ASHP Foundation Master’s Resident Practice-Based Research Grant for separate research projects. The ASHP grant is awarded to support pharmacy researchers in programs that combine the completion of a residency and a master’s degree.
