The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy has over 8,000 alumni; earlier this month, two of them were recognized for their lifetimes of service and commitment to the profession.

The Pharmacy Alumni Association (PAA) announced the awards at its annual Foundation Recognition Dinner on Feb. 21 at the Umstead Hotel. PAA President Rashonda Burkett introduced the two recipients.

Paul Stevenson, BS Pharm ’58, of Elizabeth City, N.C., received the Samuel L. Burrus Family Award for Community Service. The award goes to an alumnus who has been involved with “outstanding and unselfish” community engagement outside of a regular pharmacy practice. Stevenson earned his Pharm.D. from the School in 1958 and worked alongside his father, John Stevenson, at a family-owned pharmacy in Elizabeth City. He was also a founder of the Elizabeth City Community Pharmacy/Prescription Project, which helps patients access affordable prescription medications.

Paul’s son, Lindsay Stevenson, spoke about his accomplishments at the recognition dinner.

“…At the core of Paul Stevenson is love and faith in action with a strong work ethic not uncommon to those in his generation,” Lindsay said. “Many times, done in secret, his acts of kindness and service have not gone unappreciated.”

Allen “Jo” Cato III, BS Pharm ’87, Ph.D. ’94, of Durham, N.C., received the Pharmacy Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award, which honors an alumnus whose work “enhances the School and profession of pharmacy.” He has spent nearly two decades involved with new drug development, especially as it relates to pharmacokinetics and metabolism. He cofounded Cato Research in 1988, which helps pharmaceutical companies meet their research and development goals. Over the years, he has served as chief operational officer for Cato Research and managed several company locations including South Africa and Montreal.

In his speech, Cato thanked his advisor, the School’s Associate Dean for Research and Education Kim Brouwer, Pharm.D., Ph.D., for encouraging him to “figure it out”: a mantra he has kept with him throughout his career.
