501 Pharmacy and Hillsborough Pharmacy & Nutrition are two independent, community pharmacies located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Hillsborough North Carolina. 501 Pharmacy and Hillsborough Pharmacy & Nutrition are located within 15 minutes from UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. The pharmacies have been serving their respective communities for approximately 10 years and the owners have been working in this area for over 20 years in various community pharmacy settings. These two sites are excited to collaboratively employ and train a PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Resident to understand the clinical applications of pharmacy services, as well as collaboration with community providers and ambulatory medicine within an existing brick and mortar pharmacy. The site will provide opportunities for the resident to train UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy students and other UNC preceptor sites to learn how to identify, bill and get paid for clinical interventions via a medical EHR platform and a collaborative practice agreement with IndyCare Health. Our unique residency will offer a chance to work within a hub (pharmacy and clinic) and a spoke (pharmacy with collaborative practice agreement) so they can perform at the top of their pharmacy licenses.

We are proud that our pharmacists also have interesting backgrounds and unique experiences to help our resident pharmacist catapult their education in value-based medicine and train the next generation of clinically minded pharmacists.

About the Preceptors

Greg Vassie, PharmD
Owner

Greg is a generational pharmacist and graduated with a PharmD from UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2003. Before pharmacy school he studied business with a concentration in accounting at Drexel and UNC. In school, Greg was determined to pursue an illustrious career within Big Pharma (interning at GSK focusing on sales, marketing, drug information and medical writing) but decided to focus on community pharmacy after contemplating about his future and how he wanted to control what he could that afforded him the best ability to succeed both professionally and financially. This decision prompted him to open many community pharmacies across North Carolina and offered him many opportunities to partner with some amazing pharmacists and friends over the last 20 years. However, over time he watched DIR fees and other tactics shift money and patients away from his pharmacies. His response was co-founding IndyCare, a consumer-driven healthcare company focusing on acute, colla
borative, and preventative care that goes into existing brick-and-mortar pharmacies and allows pharmacists to engage and get reimbursed for clinical patient care. Greg is determined to transform independent pharmacies into healthcare solution shops and is involved in activities and roles to help pharmacists thrive in the new world of value-based medicine.

Greg opened 501 Pharmacy with partner, Han Su, and wife, Jennifer, in 2016. The pharmacy is on the south end of Chapel Hill and is minutes from UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. The pharmacy offers many of the traditional services you expect but also offers differentiated services including: compounding; employer testing/vaccination services; comprehensive synchronization program that includes remote-patient monitoring and preventative services; annual wellness visits; point-of-care testing with standing order prescription allowances under a collaborative practice agreement; and even offers farm-raised ice cream to reward kids for being brave for getting immunizations. He believes that pharmacist’s relationship with their patients, trust equity, and involvement in their communities will be the essential ingredients necessary to help payers and strategic partners achieve their goals and that this unfair advantage we control will help us drive engagement and profitable growth in the future.

Greg continues to stay very active within a multitude of pharmacy organizations. He is the Lead Luminary of CPESN NC and on the board of CPESN USA and executive committee of UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Foundation. He also is the representative leader of the Triangle region of IPN North Carolina Association of Pharmacists. His other community involvement includes being a part of his local Chatham Council of Aging, Chatham Community College Foundation, and others.

Tiffany Graham Barber, PharmD
Owner

Tiffany Graham Barber, PharmD, RPh, Pharmacy Manager/Owner, attended UNC Chapel Hill for her undergraduate degree and then went to UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy graduating with distinction in 2008. In late 2011, she started at a newly opened independent pharmacy in the small town of Hillsborough, NC and ended up buying the pharmacy in March of 2012. Since then, Tiffany has been the pharmacy manager of Hillsborough Pharmacy & Nutrition and has developed the pharmacy into an integral part of the community, winning Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year in 2013. Hillsborough Pharmacy focuses on personal service, a wide range of clinical services, and a robust immunization program. Tiffany is a preceptor of pharmacy students, heavily involved in her community, on the CPESN NC luminary board, and was honored to win NCAP’s Community Care Pharmacist of the Year in 2017, Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Person of the Year in 2018, and the prestigious Bowl of Hygeia Award in 2022. In her “free time” she enjoys spending time with her kids (Vera, 9yrs and Jonas, 6yrs) and husband, laughing at corny jokes, and taking much needed naps.

Han Su, PharmD
Site Coordinator

Han Su, PharmD, is a founding partner of 501 Pharmacy, Chapel Hill’s six-time “Best of Chapel Hill” winner. Han graduated from the College of Pharmacy at the University of South Carolina, the state’s oldest and largest professional pharmacy school, receiving his B.S. in 1995, immediately followed by the PharmD program in 1996.

After serving as a retail pharmacist with Revco since 1996 (later becoming CVS in 1997), Han’s resume expanded to include managerial positions within the retail giant in the Chapel Hill and Carrboro area, but ultimately, he set his sights toward serving as a community-focused small business owner in 2016 with the opening of 501 Pharmacy. Alongside founding partner Greg Vassie, Han remains excited about his team’s ability to offer the services of an independent pharmacy to Chapel Hill where they feel they are able to give the community more personalizd customer service, locally manufactured products and a wide selection of quality over-the-counter products.

In addition to overseeing the day-to-day operations of 501 Pharmacy’s community practice, Han is also a certified immunizer and often can be found around the “Chapelboro” area facilitating vaccination clinics for residential communities, workplaces, and beyond. When he’s not on-site at the pharmacy or off-site hosting clinics, Han’s duties as husband to Kristy Su, FNP, and dad to sons Kasen and Kai and daughter Abby (plus his four-legged family members) keep him on the go, especially during swim season when it’s time to cheer on the Cary Park Sea Dragons summer swim team and Raleigh Swimming Association’s year-round team. Joe Williams, PharmD, MBA
Owner and Site Coordinator

Joe Williams is a graduate of Campbell University School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences where he received his Doctor of Pharmacy in 2011. During his time at Campbell University, he also earned his MBA from the Lundy-Fetterman School of Business. In 2015, Joe purchased his first pharmacy, Brisson Drugs in St Pauls, NC. He later grew his business by acquiring Clinic Pharmacy in 2018. Joe opened his third pharmacy, Fairmont Drug Company, in 2020 during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Joe has a passion for excellent patient care that led him to develop the “Medsmart” program which is his process for delivering the best patient care possible. He offers consulting services to help independent pharmacies improve their business based on the knowledge he has gained through his own professional experiences.

Campus Health provides advanced pharmacy services for the students, post-docs, faculty and staff at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Campus Health encompasses both a clinic-based dispensing pharmacy within the UNC Campus Health building and a pharmacy located within the campus bookstore, Student Stores Pharmacy, which is in the heart of the bustling campus.

Campus Health is a comprehensive medical practice with a mission of helping UNC students and post-docs thrive through patient-centered and inclusive care, including such services as primary care, gynecology, counseling and psychological services, sports medicine, physical therapy, nutrition therapy, laboratory services, radiology, student wellness, international travel clinic, and clinical pharmacy services. Collaborative care is one of the main tenets of the services offered at Campus Health. Pharmacists at Campus Health provide innovative, high level clinical services every day. Many of the pharmacists at Campus Health and Student Stores Pharmacies are Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners (CPPs) with collaborative practice agreements with Campus Health primary care physicians, allowing them prescribing capabilities for disease states such as diabetes, asthma, contraception, emergency contraception, and international travel health.

About the Preceptors

Elizabeth Breeden, PharmD, CPP
Preceptor

Dr. Elizabeth Breeden is a Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner and a residency preceptor for the PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residents with Campus Health. Originally from Kansas City, she received her Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy. Dr. Breeden completed her PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residency with the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy and Campus Health in Chapel Hill, NC. She then completed a Community-based Mental Health Fellowship with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and Campus Health in Chapel Hill, NC. Her areas of interest include mental health, precepting and patient education. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, watching reality TV, and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs.

Raisa El-Kurdi, PharmD, CPP
Preceptor

Dr. Raisa El-Kurdi is a Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and a residency preceptor for the PGY1 Community-based pharmacy residents with Campus Health. Originally from Northern Virginia, she received her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Chemistry from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA and received her Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore School of Pharmacy. Dr. El-Kurdi completed her PGY-1 residency with the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy and Campus Health in Chapel Hill, NC. She specializes in drug therapy management and her professional interests include mental health, pharmacogenetics, and immunizations. Outside of CAPS and serving as a preceptor, she enjoys traveling, baking, spa days, coffee and time with family and friends. She is a member of American Pharmacists Association (APhA), American College Health Association (ACHA), and College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP).

Thomas Moscatelli Jr, PharmD, CPP
Preceptor

Dr. Thomas Moscatelli is the pharmacy manager at UNC Student Stores Pharmacy. He is originally from Boston, MA and moved to Chapel Hill, NC during the summer of 2019. Thomas received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. Before joining UNC Campus Health, he worked as a pharmacy manager at CVS Health on the campus of Boston University. There he served as a primary preceptor for introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experience students, mostly from Northeastern University and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. His areas of professional interest are immunizations, travel health, and over-the-counter recommendations. Outside of pharmacy, Thomas enjoys attending concerts and live sporting events, especially hockey and baseball.

Amy Sauls, PharmD, BCACP, CPP
Manager

Dr. Amy Sauls is the Director of Pharmacy and Professional Services for Campus Health. She received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  She has a Certificate in Travel Health from the International Society of Travel Medicine, and she is a member of the International Society of Travel Medicine, American Pharmacists Association, and the American College Health Association. Sauls is the 2016 recipient of the Claude Paoloni Community Preceptor of the Year award.  Her extended professional interests include travel medicine, contraception, and medication safety.

Alexis (Alex) Shook, PharmD, CPP
Site Coordinator

Dr. Alexis Shook is a Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner and the Campus Health Site Coordinator. She was born and raised in Boone, North Carolina. She attended undergrad at UNC – Chapel Hill and pharmacy school at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Alexis loved Carolina so much she stayed and completed both the PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residency Program and Community-based Mental Health Fellowship through UNC at the Campus Health site. Clinical areas of interest include mental health, asthma, sports medicine, and contraception. In her free time she loves to spend time with her husband and cats, reading anything she can get her hands on, watching sports, and traveling as much as she can.

Lauren Terhune, PharmD, CPP
Preceptor

Dr. Lauren Terhune is a Chapel Hill native. She completed a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biology at the Florida State University in 2010. Then going on to complete her Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) at the University of North Carolina Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2015. She has always had a passion for community pharmacy, especially when it comes to direct patient care and education to her patients. Throughout pharmacy school, Lauren was an intern at Harris Teeter and decided to continue working for the grocery store chain after completing her degree. She worked as a floater pharmacist for a few months and then worked 5 years (2015-2020) as a staff pharmacist at a Harris Teeter in Cary, NC. Lauren began her career at Campus Health Pharmacy working PRN for about 2 years before joining the team full time in September 2020. She has experience working with both IPPE and APPE students from both UNC and Campbell University, as well as the UNC Campus Health Residents. Her strengths are in counseling and over-the-counter recommendations. She is currently working towards becoming a Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner and has an interest in women’s health and skin care. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Dylan, and their dog, Wally. In addition, she loves to cook and has become an avid reader since the beginning of the pandemic. When she needs some “me-time” she loves shopping and finding a great sale, lounging poolside with a good book, watching Bravo, and treating herself to spa treatments.

Cape Fear Clinic, Inc., founded in 1991, is a 501(c)3 non-profit clinic serving a four-county area in southeastern North Carolina.  The organization serves adults in New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, and Columbus Counties who are uninsured and have incomes of no more than 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines or have Medicaid.

The on-site pharmacy is uniquely integrated with the clinic, allowing pharmacists, residents, student pharmacists, and other pharmacy staff to actively participate in the provision of direct patient care.  Patient care services include:

• Medication therapy management (MTM)
• Comprehensive immunization services
• Anticoagulation management
• Medication reconciliation
• Formulary management & therapeutic interchange programs
• Patient assistance programs
• Medication synchronization and adherence programs

Residents also participate in:

• Direct patient care services in both primary care and specialty clinic areas

Jennifer Askew Buxton, BS, PharmD, CPP, FASHP, FNCAP
Site Coordinator

Jennifer Askew Buxton, a North Carolina native, received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from UNC-Chapel Hill and completed a Primary Care Residency with Coastal AHEC and New Hanover Regional Medical Center.  In her almost 20 years of pharmacy practice, Dr. Buxton has worked in hospital, community, ambulatory care, and home infusion practice settings in distributive, clinical, and administrative roles.  Currently, she is the Chief Pharmacy Office, Chief Operating Officer, and Co-Director of Mental Health Services at Cape Fear Clinic.

Dr. Buxton has held local, state, and national leadership positions with the American Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (ASHP), the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists (NCAP), International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), and American Pharmacists Association (APhA).  She currently serves a member of the Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner (CPP) Application Review Committee for the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy.  She has also served several terms on the NCAP Board of Directors, and has participated in both the ASHP and APhA Houses of Delegates.  Locally, she has served on the Board of Directors for Cape Fear HealthNet and the New Hanover County Healthcare Coalition.

Dr. Buxton precepts pharmacy students from all North Carolina schools of pharmacy and pharmacy technician students from the local community college.  She is also the author of a book entitled From Student to Pharmacist: Making the Transition in association with APhA.  She was acknowledged by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) as a Master Preceptor in 2016 and is the winner of the 2014 Wilma Women to Watch Award in Healthcare, the 2014 Wilmington Business Journal Healthcare Heroes Healthcare Professional of the Year Award, the 2008 NCAP Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award, and the 2009 ASHP Distinguished Service Award.

Preceptor: Tracey Simmons-Kornegay, PharmD

Duplin County Health Department is a local governmental agency responsible for providing essential health care services to the residents of Duplin County. Its mission is to provide prevention, promotion, and protection measures to ensure the health of the community and environment by identifying and reducing health risks in the community; detecting, investigating, and preventing the spread of disease; and promoting and providing the availability and accessibility of quality health care services in partnership with the community. The target population includes low income, uninsured, those at risk for poor health outcomes, and vulnerable residents. Together, we will work to improve the health and well-being of all citizens of Duplin County.

Duplin County Health Department services include:

• Chronic disease management in Primary Care Clinic
• Maternal Health and Family Planning
• Employer-based Wellness Clinic
• Communicable Disease management (including Hepatitis C Clinic)
• Community Health Outreach

Healthcare in Duplin County is collaborative and diverse which will afford a special PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Resident the ability to impact patients across the continuum through both traditional and non-traditional pathways. In addition to collaboration with Health Department patients and providers, the resident will have the unique opportunity to team up with a local independent retail pharmacy for patient-centered dispensing and ECU Health Duplin Hospital for hospital-based pharmacy services. In Duplin County, health literacy and low literacy levels contribute to decreased access to care, increased emergency room visits and higher medical costs. More than 20% of the county’s population is Hispanic/latinX adding a layer of complexity to the delivery of healthcare and the dissemination of information related to healthcare. Nearly 20% of the population is uninsured and 21% of county residents live below the federal poverty level. With these challenges in mind, opportunities to impact the health of the community abound!

Other resident activities may include:

• Direct patient care in rural Family Medicine Clinic
• Teaching and precepting healthcare learners at the practice site (nursing, allied health)
• Community practice-based quality improvement projects and/or research projects
• Patient counseling and education including disease-state management
• Budgeting, credentialing, billing and reimbursement strategies

In collaboration with ECU Health Duplin Hospital, residents may also participate in:

• Teaching and precepting introductory and advanced experiential rotations for pharmacy students from various schools of pharmacy in a layered learning model
• Delivering education programs to patients, caregivers and members of the pharmacy team and other health care professionals based at the hospital
• Obtaining complete and accurate Best Possible Medication History (BPMH) for all admitted patients and documenting in the electronic health record
• Growing leadership and management skills through interactions with pharmacy leaders, pharmacy residents, participation in management activities, decision-making, quality improvement projects, and formulary management.
• Direct patient care opportunities such as culture call-back for patients discharged from the Emergency Department, sterile compounding, care transitions and community health events

About the Preceptor

Tracey Simmons-Kornegay, PharmD
Site Coordinator

Tracey Simmons-Kornegay is the Site Coordinator for the PGY1 CPRP based at Duplin County Health Department. After receiving her Doctor of Pharmacy from UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2002, Tracey completed a community practice residency with Area L AHEC in Rocky Mount, one of nine centers in the NC AHEC Program. During the residency, she gained experience in long-term care, ambulatory care, and retail pharmacy. After residency, she worked as a retail pharmacist, taught a pharmacy technician course at a local community college, and performed chart reviews for Community Care of North Carolina, which led to a role as one of the network pharmacists at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, now ECU Health Medical Center. Now, she serves as Duplin County Health Director, a position she has held for nearly five years. In 2022, Tracey was awarded the North Carolina Pharmacy Associations’ Excellence in Innovation Award, which is presented to a pharmacist in each state demonstrating significant innovation, which results in improved patient care, in their respective pharmacy practice. Tracey received the award for her role in involving individuals from various healthcare disciplines in administering COVID-19 vaccines during the vaccine rollout in 2021.

Harris Teeter Pharmacy is a grocery chain community pharmacy that operates 112 pharmacy locations in North Carolina. Harris Teeter Pharmacy is committed to providing exceptional patient care and advancing the profession of pharmacy. Innovative pharmacy designs, including private counseling areas, allow for improved pharmacist-patient communication.

Harris Teeter Pharmacy offers a community pharmacy residency that provides an opportunity to enhance your clinical and professional skills by providing a variety of hands-on wellness and medication therapy management services. Advanced clinical services include immunization services, medication synchronization, health screenings and medication therapy management.

The resident will be involved in teaching opportunities with Harris Teeter’s Pharmacy Operations Team and will interact with other Division and Regional leaders of the pharmacy team. Seasonally, the resident will assist with running off-site immunization clinics. In addition, they will have the opportunity to precept and teach pharmacy students, conduct a research project, write articles for publication in collaboration with UNC faculty, and develop and implement new or expanded clinical services.

Lauren Porter, PharmD
Manager

Lauren completed her undergraduate studies at Clemson University (2009) and received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from Wingate University (2013). Lauren began her pharmacy career with Harris Teeter in 2013 and has served in several roles within the Company. Lauren is currently a Pharmacy Operations Manager in the Raleigh, NC area. Lauren has a passion for taking care of patients, teaching and developing pharmacists and for empowering and mentoring her team members and her peers.

At Harris Teeter, Lauren serves as a Patient Care SME where she is responsible for developing and implementing clinical initiatives, and state protocols within the Pharmacy Department. Lauren currently serves as the Membership Coordinator for the North Carolina Immunization Coalition and serves as an active member in North Carolina Association of Pharmacists (NCAP), American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and Phi Delta Chi (PDC).

In her time off, Lauren enjoys good food, spending time with family and friends and taking trips to the mountains.

Julia is a Pharmacy Manager at Harris Teeter in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is originally from Richmond, VA and graduated from The University of South Carolina in 2016 with her Doctorate of Pharmacy. Before joining Harris Teeter, Julia worked as a pharmacy intern at Hawthorne Pharmacy in Columbia, SC. Starting at an independent pharmacy, Julia learned how to build strong and trusting relationships with her patients. After graduation, Julia worked for Walgreens as a Floater, Staff Pharmacist, and Pharmacy Manager.

In 2020, Julia joined the Harris Teeter team and has enjoyed growing her team and going above and beyond for her patients. Julia’s professional interests include vaccinations and medication therapy management.

In her spare time, she enjoys reading, outdoor activities, traveling to new places, and spending time with her friends and family

Christina Andrievk, RPh
Preceptor

Christina’s love for pharmacy began when she worked as a technician at an independent pharmacy. This exposure led her to attend pharmacy school and work as a Pharmacy Manager with Eckerd Drug.

She is currently working for Harris Teeter Pharmacy as a Staff Pharmacist. Christina has worked for Harris Teeter for 20 years and this experience has led her to perform excellent customer care. In addition, she has developed a strong support system for her team.

Christina enjoys being an advocate for patients that struggle navigating the health care system and strives to develop cohesion and unity with all divisions of healthcare. Outside of work, she enjoys crafting, making leather goods and traveling.

The resident will be involved in teaching opportunities with Harris Teeter’s Pharmacy Operations Team and will interact with other Division and Regional leaders of the pharmacy team. Seasonally, the resident will assist with running off-site immunization clinics. Lauren Porter, PharmD
Manager

Lauren completed her undergraduate studies at Clemson University (2009) and received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from Wingate University (2013). Lauren began her pharmacy career with Harris Teeter in 2013 and has served in several roles within the Company. Lauren is currently a Pharmacy Operations Manager in the Raleigh, NC area. Lauren has a passion for taking care of patients, teaching and developing pharmacists and for empowering and mentoring her team members and her peers.

At Harris Teeter, Lauren serves as a Patient Care SME where she is responsible for developing and implementing clinical initiatives, and state protocols within the Pharmacy Department. Lauren currently serves as the Membership Coordinator for the North Carolina Immunization Coalition and serves as an active member in North Carolina Association of Pharmacists (NCAP), American Pharmacists Association (APhA) and Phi Delta Chi (PDC).

In her time off, Lauren enjoys good food, spending time with family and friends and taking trips to the mountains.

Katie Lord, PharmD
Site Coordinator

Katie attended the University of South Carolina for undergraduate studies and completed pharmacy school in 2015 from the South Carolina College of Pharmacy (Greenville Campus). After graduation, she spent her first five years working at Barney’s Pharmacy in Augusta, GA. She was able to lead a smoking cessation program there in addition to being the compounding pharmacist. During her time at Barney’s Katie was able to precept students and residents from several pharmacy schools and grow her passion for teaching.

Currently Katie works for Harris Teeter as a Staff Pharmacist at their highest volume location (Fuquay-Varina). She is still passionate about teaching/precepting students as well as mental health and women’s health. She loves community pharmacy and the relationships she’s able to foster with her patients through clinical services.

In her free time Katie enjoys reading, true-crime podcasts, and exploring the triangle with her husband and two kids.

Amie Howe, PharmD
Site Coordinator

Dr. Amie Howe is the Site Coordinator for the Moose Pharmacy Community-based Residency Program. She also serves as the Technology Center Manager and the Operations Manager for Moose Pharmacy of Mount Pleasant. Amie received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2001. Amie joined the Moose Team in 2001 and began her pharmacy career as the manager of the now relocated Moose Pharmacy of Locust.

Since becoming Manager at the Mount Pleasant location in 2017, Amie has been dedicated to integrating technology into daily operations and improving the quality of clinical services that patients receive. Along with technology operations and day-to-day staffing, Amie has focused on incorporating clinical activities such as compounding, immunizations, care planning, Medication Therapy Management (MTM) Services, adherence initiatives, and other innovative projects into the workflow. She has also been largely responsible for improving the logistics of the Moose Pharmacy Medication Adherence Program and ensuring smooth operation across all seven pharmacies in the company.

Amie serves as a preceptor for advanced community experiential rotations for pharmacy students from various schools of pharmacy. She is also a preceptor for early immersion students for UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. She also holds a position on the North Carolina Medical Disaster Team through the Department of Health of Human Services (HHS).

Joe Moose, PharmD
Owner

Dr. Joe Moose is a clinical pharmacist and co-owner of Moose Pharmacy and its 7 locations in NC. Joe received his Doctorate of Pharmacy from Campbell University (1990). Joe serves as a primary preceptor with the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Community Pharmacy Residency Program. He is also a preceptor for students completing introductory and advanced practice experiential education rotations for multiple pharmacy schools across the country.

He has contributed to the state of North Carolina by serving on a variety of committees, including chairperson for the NC Medicaid Drug Utilization Review.   In his role at Moose Pharmacy, he has established collaborative practice agreements with local physician’s offices to integrate community pharmacists into a patient-centered medical home.  Under his leadership, Moose Pharmacy has also partnered with the City of Charlotte and Union County to manage employees enrolled in the diabetes management program.  Working with his pharmacy staff, Joe has implemented and enhanced a variety of clinical services in his pharmacy, including MTM.

Joe also serves as a consultant to Community Care of North Carolina in the position of Lead Community Pharmacy Coordinator. In this role, he has built a network of high-quality community pharmacies that strive to offer enhanced value to payors. He has maintained professional affiliations with the National Community Pharmacists Association and North Carolina Association of Pharmacists.

Joey McLaughlin, RPh
Owner

Joey McLaughlin received his bachelor of science in pharmacy in 1983 from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. Upon graduation, he began his career at an independent pharmacy in Jacksonville, NC. In 1996 he partnered with Rob Bizzell, CEO and president of Realo Discount Drug, and opened Carolina Home Medical with the aim of improving overall patient care. He expanded this partnership in 1998 when he opened his first drug store in New Bern, NC. McLaughlin currently owns 18 Realo Discount Drugs locations, one extended care pharmacy and one specialty pharmacy

McLaughlin was elected in 2006 to the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy and was served as its president in 2010. In addition to the NCBP, McLaughlin sits on the Craven County Home Health and Hospice Board of Directors, the Cape Fear Community College Pharmacy Technician Advisory Board, and the NC PRN Board.

Anna Baird, PharmD
Site Coordinator

Anna Baird serves as the Director of Clinical Operations for Realo Drugs. After graduating from UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy in 2018, Baird completed her PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residency with UNC and Realo Drugs and has remained in a clinically integrated role with the company ever since. She assists all locations with clinical efforts including vaccine programs, adherence packaging, and medication synchronization. She has operationalized special services across the company including hormonal contraceptive prescribing and long-acting injectable administration. In her clinical role in New Bern, Baird provides chronic care management services for a local ACO and works with providers to improve quality metrics. She is the program coordinator and a certified lifestyle coach for the National Diabetes Prevention Program and an educator for Realo’s Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support program. Baird is passionate about enhancing the role of community pharmacy and strives to involve her residents and students in numerous opportunities to advance community pharmacy practice both on and off the counter.

Ashley Abode, PharmD
Preceptor

Ashley Abode, PharmD is a graduate of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. She currently serves as the Clinical Service Coordinator for Realo Drugs. In her role as Clinical Service Coordinator, she serves as a clinical pharmacist providing chronic care management services and comprehensive medication reviews. She works closely with providers at a local ACO and PCMH to provide patient care services and improve quality metrics. She also engages with payers and providers to build partnerships that move independent pharmacists away from the traditional dispensing role.

Rocky Mount Medical Park Pharmacy is an independent pharmacy located in Rocky Mount, NC inside a robust medical clinic building with multiple specialties. This pharmacy will serve as one of the primary locations for the Rural Health Residency. Our location is McDowell’s Pharmacy, located in Scotland Neck, NC, which has been serving the Scotland Neck community for over 120 years. This Resident will have the opportunity to collaborate and work closely with both locations and 4 full-time Clinical Pharmacists to serve a wide range of patients with various chronic disease states. We work closely with our local hospital and clinics and have EHR access in order to provide adherence packaging and medication reconciliation. We truly believe that community pharmacy is the best place to practice at the top of your license, and our Resident will have the opportunity to develop and implement cutting edge clinical services to better care for our patients and communities. This residency will be provided with the assistance of the UNC ESOP and will be funded by the Duke Endowment Grant with the goal of building sustainable partnerships and residency sites in the Eastern part of the state. The hope is that this Resident would help to establish a full-time clinical position and potentially stay on site after completing the residency/fellowship to continue to grow progressive clinical services.

Thomas McDowell, PharmD
Owner and Site Coordinator

Thomas McDowell is a 4th generation Community Pharmacist and owner of McDowell’s Pharmacy in Scotland Neck, NC and Rocky Mount Medical Park Pharmacy in Rocky Mount, NC. McDowell’s Pharmacy has been owned and operated by the McDowell family for over 100 years. Since returning home to operate the family pharmacy, Thomas has implemented a large immunization program, a robust adherence packaging and delivery service, and numerous other clinical services. Thomas purchased Rocky Mount Medical Park Pharmacy in 2021 to bring his passion for exceptional patient care and personalized service to the Nash County area. This expansion has led to several clinic and hospital collaborations that have enhanced patient care. Thomas currently volunteers with numerous groups including CPESN-NC, Area L AHEC, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Eastern Advisory Committee, and Scotland Neck Rising, a non-profit dedicated to economic revitalization and historic preservation. He has maintained professional affiliations with the National Community Pharmacists Association and North Carolina Association of Pharmacists. Thomas is a proud alumnus of UNC ESOP Class of 2016 and an avid Tar Heel sports fan. He is happily married to his wife, Blaine, and has two beautiful children, Press and Mary Hayes.

Max Bible, RPh
Preceptor

Max Bible is the Pharacy Manager at Walgreens in Asheville, NC. He received his BS in Pharmacy from the University of Toledo in 1997. Max began his professional career with James Pharmacy, an independent specializing in diabetes, in Toledo Ohio.

After moving to Chicago to pursue a career in comedy, he worked at dozens of different pharmacies across the city through a staffing service. This proved valuable in many ways:

1) Max learned that he is not funny

2) Max gained extensive knowledge about pharmacy workflow, policies, and procedures.

3) Max really enjoyed his time at Statscript (now Bioscript) Pharmacy which is an HIV Specialty Pharmacy.

He joined Walgreens in 2002 and was promoted to Pharmacy Manager in 2006 which coincided with a move to Asheville NC to open a new store. It was there where he was able to use what he learned from staffing to establish an efficient and friendly store. He also brought an extensive HIV/AIDS knowledge that patients soon caught on to. He started a relationship with the Western North Carolina AIDS Project (WNCAP) by developing a voucher program, volunteering, and giving in-services to case managers. Because of this relationship his store was selected by Walgreens to become an HIV Center of Excellence.

Besides HIV / AIDS, his practice interests also include maximizing pharmacists Medication Therapy Management opportunities, expanding community vaccinations, health testing, and mentoring and precepting pharmacy students.

Max is a member of the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists. He has served as a preceptor to introductory and advanced pharmacy students from UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Wingate University, LECOM School of Pharmacy, SC College of Pharmacy, and Mercer.

Amy Lenell, PharmD, CLC
Site Coordinator

Dr. Amy Lenell is the Residency Site Coordinator and a staff pharmacist at Walgreens in Asheville, NC. She attended Butler University and graduated with her PharmD in 2007. She began her career with Walgreens in Indianapolis, working as a Pharmacy Manager and coordinating IPPE, APPE and summer internship experiences for pharmacy students. She developed her love of teaching both in and out of the classroom, developing continuing education and guest lecturing at Butler University. Amy precepted the teaching-learning experience and the women’s healthelective for the PGY1 community-based residency program with Walgreens and Purdue University.

Amy has a passion for outreach in the community. In Indianapolis, this meant partnering with community organizations to develop a program to serve families with free lactation support called Well Babies. In 2017, Amy relocated to Asheville, NC to become the staff pharmacist and Site Coordinator. In this role, she also sees patients as a health coach for the Asheville Project and oversees MTM cases for 2 districts. This Walgreens is an HIV Center of Excellence and serves the community by providing harm reduction services in a truly welcoming environment.

Amy’s goal is to educate future and current pharmacists on the opportunities for clinical excellence in community practice. She is passionate about public health, MTM, women’s health, teaching/mentorship, and professional development. Amy is a member of the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists and the Western North Carolina Outpatient Pharmacy Partners (WNCOPP). She also serves on the Buncombe County Health and Human Services Board. She is a preceptor for UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, Wingate University and Butler University.
