UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy faculty members Stephen Eckel, Pharm.D., M.H.A., and Stefanie Ferreri, Pharm.D., were recognized by the North Carolina Association of Pharmacists at its 2016 Convention.

Eckel, the president of NCAP, was presented with the President’s Award, and Ferreri, the president-elect, was presented with the National Community Pharmacists Association Leadership Award and McKesson Leadership Award, which are given to the president-elect for his or her service and leadership in NCAP and to the North Carolina pharmacy community.

Other faculty members receiving awards at the convention were Assistant Professor of Clinical Education Joseph Moose, Pharm.D., who received the Bowl of Hygeia, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Education Courtenay Wilson, Pharm.D., who received the Excellence in Innovation Award.

Eckel is the associate dean for global engagement and a clinical associate professor in the Division of Practice Advancement and Clinical Education, as well as the division’s vice chair for graduate and postgraduate education. He is the associate director of pharmacy at UNC Hospitals.

Eckel spearheaded the creation of UNC Pharmacy Grand Rounds with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and launched ChemoGLO, a company that detects surface contamination by hazardous drugs and makes chemical wipes that clean surfaces contaminated by chemotherapy drugs. He is the editor of the health-system edition of Pharmacy Times.

Eckel received his Bachelor of Science in pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy from UNC-Chapel Hill. He completed a pharmacy practice residency at Duke University Medical Center and joined UNC Hospitals as a clinical pharmacist. He also holds a Master’s of Health-Care Administration from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist.

Ferreri is a clinical professor in PACE. She served as director of the community pharmacy residency program from 2004 to 2015 and residency preceptor for the program prior to that. Since 2001, she has supervised and mentored more than 80 community pharmacy residents in the program.

Ferreri has developed two additional postgraduate leaning opportunities, the two-year Community Pharmacy Research Fellowship, which trains graduates for research careers in academia, and the one-year Independent Pharmacy Ownership Residency, which trains the next generation of independent pharmacy owners.

Ferreri received her Bachelor of Science in pharmacy from the University of Connecticut and her Doctor of Pharmacy from Campbell University. She completed a pharmacy practice residency at the Connecticut Health Center, as well as a community pharmacy residency at Campbell in partnership with Ward Drug of Nashville, North Carolina. She is also a board-certified ambulatory care pharmacist.
