Jeremy Espeut, PharmD, a student in the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Master of Science in Pharmacy Administration and Leadership program, is carving a unique path. He is part of the hospital partnership resident track in collaboration with his corporate pharmacy administration and leadership residency at Baptist Health South Florida. Based in Miami, his role bridges leadership development and pharmacy innovation.

“This program is molding me to be a future leader,” he said. “It’s a brand-new endeavor for the health system and for me, and I’m honored to be part of this pioneering initiative.”

This track is designed for full-time students with a PharmD degree seeking a residency training experience. The online and residential program partners with 20 hospital practice sites across 10 states, with 100% of graduates placed in health care leadership roles.  It combines classroom instruction with a two-year residency in a health care setting. Espeut is the first resident from Baptist Health South Florida to enter the program.

“The MS in Pharmacy Administration and Leadership program is meant to equip students like Jeremy with the tools, skills, and real-world experiences needed to lead transformative change in health care,” said Kathryn Morbitzer, PharmD, assistant director of the MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a concentration in Health-System Pharmacy Administration program. “We are proud to see our students thrive and pave the way for future residents in our program.”

Espeut’s journey in pharmacy began at just 13 years old when his mother, a nurse, approached him with a potential volunteer opportunity at the hospital where she worked. Pursuing it in order to meet his required volunteer hours for school, the volunteer coordinator presented him with two options for volunteering: the pharmacy or the cafeteria. The pharmacy quickly captured his attention.

“I fell in love the moment I stepped in,” he recalls. “I loved the engagement and the fast-paced workflow. What was supposed to be one summer turned into two, and by the end, I knew I wanted to be a pharmacist.”

From that moment, Espeut crafted a detailed roadmap. The first step was becoming a pharmacy technician on his 18th birthday, then earning his PharmD from Nova Southeastern University (NSU Florida). Along the way, his aspirations shifted from retail pharmacy to leadership, thanks to pivotal experiences in pharmacy school.

“In school, for the entire first semester, I dressed professionally in a dress shirt and tie with slacks and carried a briefcase—though it was mostly empty,” he jokes. “My classmates encouraged me to run for class president because I looked the part, and even though I was nervous about public speaking and an introvert, I gave it a shot. Winning that election changed everything.”

Because of several mentors and unique experiences within pharmacy, he developed a passion for leadership. He went on to obtain leadership roles at the local, state, and national level throughout his doctorate program, ultimately winning the Leadership Award for his school, as well as Student of the Year for the College of Pharmacy and Overall Student of the Year at NSU Florida.

Espeut focused on transferrable skills such as public speaking, team engagement, strategy, and innovation. These skills led him to pursue his current residency and the School’s MS program.

“This program has been transformative,” he shared. “I’ve learned so much, and it pushes me out of my comfort zone while fostering invaluable relationships with my cohort. Leadership is a ‘we’ approach, and Carolina emphasizes the importance of people and teamwork.”

Espeut is enthusiastic and hopeful to continue his journey at Baptist Health South Florida after graduating in May 2025. “This experience has prepared me as a leader ready to inspire and engage others.”
