UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Magdalene Mallory, PharmD candidate class of 2026, was selected as one of 28 students across the country for The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy’s (AACP) Aspiring Academics Program.
The AACP Aspiring Academics Program was designed to facilitate a deeper understanding of career paths in academic pharmacy. Over the next year, the cohort will participate in monthly modules, mentorship, networking, a group project, involvement with AACP, and attend AACP’s Annual Meeting in Chicago.
Mallory comes from a family of pharmacists and educators. Growing up, her parents emphasized the importance of learning both inside and outside of the classroom. Her mother held a variety of roles throughout Mallory’s education, so she was often at school from “sunup to sundown”. She even remembers pretending to be a teacher in her mom’s classroom.
However, in middle school, Mallory discovered her talent for chemistry. “I remember my teacher telling me that maybe I should consider a career in science,” she said.
With that revelation, Mallory started looking to the pharmacists in her family. Her aunt had a variety of jobs throughout her career such as working at Eli Lilly, spending time as a professor, working at Walgreens, and even being a consultant.
“The ability to just have one degree and be able to do all of those things really attracted me to the profession,” said Mallory.
In seeking full range of her degree, she desires to incorporate leadership, innovation, and philanthropy to bolster her future in academia. Being a part of the AACP Aspiring Academics program will give Mallory the opportunity to learn more about pharmacy education.
“I really do think of professors as superheroes and the experts in their fields – as students, we only see what they show us, but I know they are doing so much more behind the scenes,” she said. “I’m interested in learning the intricacies of leadership in the future of pharmacy education.”
