Mia Register is excited to start her journey as UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s senior assistant director of financial aid. This new role was created in partnership with the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid and the UNC Adams School of Dentistry (ASOD). Register will split her time equally between the School and ASOD.

“I’ve been able to hit the ground running since starting in May, and I’m looking forward to all students being back on campus,” she said.

New student orientations have taken place, and Register is busy connecting with students and sharing information about her new position so that students can utilize her as a resource.

This new role houses all things financial aid. Students can reach out to Register for information on loans, scholarships, billing, disbursements and refunds. She can also assist with questions regarding repayment of loans after graduation, understanding award offers and Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

“My best piece of advice is to not be afraid to ask questions – students often feel intimidated or don’t want to be a bother,” she said. “But no question is too big or small, or right or wrong. I want students to feel free to ask me anything – that’s why I’m here.”

She joins the School from Richard Bland College of William & Mary, where she served as the senior financial aid advisor and outreach specialist since 2017. In this role, Register was truly the face of financial aid to students and offices across campus. In addition to regularly meeting with students and families, she also coordinated onsite and offsite community engagement functions to share financial aid opportunities.  Prior to working at Richard Bland, she was a student finance specialist at Virginia College.

“Having gone through the financial aid process myself as a student, I remember the struggles I had,” she said. “I didn’t have a blueprint of what to do or how to do it. I’ve already been down this road, so I love being able to teach students and families the dos and don’ts.”

Register is passionate about helping others understand the process better. She shared that money is a scary part of going to school for many students, but it doesn’t have to be.

“Ultimately, I am a student’s advocate, and I want to help them make the best decision when it comes to financing their education.”

She will be available to pharmacy school students in-person on Mondays and Thursdays in the Office of Student Affairs and can be contacted at DDSandPharmDFinAid@unc.edu.
