Leaf Huang, Ph.D.

UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Professor Leaf Huang, Ph.D., and Bryan Roth, M.D., Ph.D., have been named as Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers for 2022.

The list recognizes researchers across the globe who demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields over the last decade.

Huang, a Fred Eshelman Distinguished Professor in the Division of Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics, has focused his research in the area of gene therapy and targeted drug delivery. His current work centers on nanoparticle vectors for gene transfer in tumors and the liver.

“I am grateful for the excellent research environment that the School has provided over many years,” said Huang.

“Leaf Huang is a world-renowned researcher, and pioneer in liposomal non-viral gene delivery for cancer and beyond,” said Fred Eshelman Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Division of Pharmacoengineering and Molecular Pharmaceutics Kristy Ainslie. “It is not surprising that he is listed once again as one of Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers because his work has been so incredibly impactful across all of drug delivery.”

Roth, who is in the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and also serves as the Michael Hooker Distinguished Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the UNC School of Medicine, has focused his research on G protein coupled receptors—a ubiquitous target for therapeutic drug discovery.

Bryan Roth, M.D., Ph.D.

“I am so grateful for all the support provided by the School over the past 17 years,” said Roth.

“I’m not surprised to learn that Bryan is listed as a highly cited researcher. He has made seminal contributions to our understanding of G protein coupled receptors, which includes opioid receptors,” said Eshelman Endowed Professor and Chair of the Division of Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry David Lawrence. “The molecular tools developed by his research team have been used by thousands of labs to elucidate the relationships between neural pathways and complex behaviors.”

Those recognized had papers that ranked in the top 1% of citations for field and publication year according to the Clarivate Web of Science citation database. A total of 35 Carolina researchers were named to the list.

The papers surveyed for the 2022 list included those published and cited during 2011-2021. There were 6,938 individuals in the top 1%.
