Throughout the month of February, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy will be highlighting perspectives from students, faculty and staff on what Black History Month means to them. This week, we spoke to Tatiana Hines, Ronny Bell and Brian Lawrence.

Tatiana Hines, Student, PY4

Where are you from?

Sicklerville, New Jersey

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month means celebration and acknowledgment of the accomplishment of oftentimes unsung Black figures. Without the talent, discoveries, and intellect of many, we would not be where we are today as a society. It is also a reminder to Black students like myself that it is possible to create a positive impact on our communities, the nation, and the rest of the world despite the injustices we still face.

Ronny Bell, Chair of the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy (DPOP)

Where are you from?

I grew up in Robeson County, in southeastern North Carolina. Robeson County is one of the most racially/ethnically diverse counties in the US, with large African American and American Indian populations, as well as a growing Hispanic population.

What does Black History Month mean to you?

As someone who identifies with a racial “minority” group (American Indian), I am always supportive of efforts to elevate the voices of other groups, and to provide educational opportunities on the history and resilience of these groups. Black History Month always gives me the privilege to increase my understanding of the Black experience in North Carolina and in the US. We should celebrate Black Lives and Black History every month, but especially in February.

Brian Lawrence, Human Resources Consultant

Where are you from?

Baton Rouge, Louisiana

What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month to me means the appreciation and acknowledgement of Blackness throughout history and how it affects all aspects of society today. It is a month to celebrate how far we have come over the many years and look ahead to the future we will continue to create.
