The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy will host the 8th Annual Asheville Summit virtually on Feb. 26. This year’s focus – “The Golden Years: Bridging the Gaps in Elderly Care.”

The Asheville Summit is an annual event hosted by UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Asheville Campus. The event is planned by pharmacy students for pharmacy students, pharmacists, and other members of the healthcare field. In previous years, more than 120 people representing 10 schools from across the southeast have come together for the event to engage in conversations about innovations in healthcare.

This year, the Summit will dive into geriatric topics such as adverse drug events, deprescribing, caring for medically frail elders, improving access to medications and more. Participants will also learn from and engage with leading national geriatric experts as well as strong advocates in pharmacy.

“We are thrilled to virtually bring together leaders in healthcare who will collaborate to advance pharmacy practice in Western North Carolina and ultimately improve our geriatric patients’ lives,” said Mollie Scott, dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy Asheville Campus. “It is our hope attendees will leave The Asheville Summit with new ideas and new relationships that better their own practices.”

Across the country, 10,000 Americans turn 65 each day and there is a shortage of geriatricians to care for older adults. Older adults often require more medications and have more chronic conditions, and pharmacists are important health care team members who focus on medication optimization.

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s Asheville Campus focuses on educating future healthcare professionals to care for this population.

This year’s event speakers include national geriatric specialists including keynote speaker Joseph Hanlon, PharmD, M.S., Professor Emeritus in Geriatric Medicine in the School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh; Gina Upchurch, RPh, MPH, founding Executive Director of Senior PharmAssist in Durham, North Carolina; and Tasha Woodall, PharmD, BCGP, CPP, director of the NC Center for Healthy Aging.
