At the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, our online and residential master’s degree programs prepare future health care leaders to manage highly complex and multi-faceted pharmacy enterprise operations. Here, we chat with Alex Hayes-Porter, Pharm.D., a current student in the School’s residential master’s program (Class of ’22).
Q: Alex, what is your current role?
A: I am a Post Graduate Year 2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Resident at St. Joseph’s Hospital – BayCare Health System in Tampa, Florida.
Q: What made you want to apply to the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy master’s program?
A: The MS program was included in my pharmacy residency experience. I am currently in my second post-graduate year (PGY2) of a Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency (HSAPL).
In my pursuit of residency, the UNC MS program was one component that appealed to me most as many respected leaders in pharmacy are alumni of the MS cohort. I had applied to several programs included in the cohort which is how I arrived at my current role today.
Q: What is your favorite part of the program?
A: My favorite component of the MS program is the opportunity to work with a diverse group of current and future leaders who are paving the way for pharmacy. The MS program offers its students a unique didactic experience to learn and grow from one another and apply those concepts to our current roles.
Q: How do you think this degree will advance your career?
A: I know this degree will provide a strong foundation for my career as a pharmacy leader. This program has challenged me to become the best version of myself personally and professionally. One component I value the most is the professional relationships I have developed with my classmates and instructors.
