Members of the UNC Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA) Chapter secured several top awards at the organization’s national 2020 Virtual Convention, held Nov. 6-8.

SNPhA is an educational service association of pharmacy students focused on pharmacy, health care issues, and minority representation in the field of pharmacy. The purpose of SNPhA is to plan, organize and coordinate programs to improve health, education and social environments of minority communities.

SNPhA also aims to offer students opportunities to develop leadership and professional skills; promote active participation in national health care issues; heighten the role of minority health care professionals as vital members of health care teams; and educate communities on better health practices, according to the SNPhA website.

During the virtual convention, UNC Chapter members won the following:

  • First place in the first annual “SNPhA Great Debate”: Galina Wang and Lee Arphai
  • Third place in the “Prescription for Service” Award: Steady Forward for Steadfast (Asheville Campus), which included Galina Wang, Lee Arphai, Morgan Phillips, and Amanda Myers
  • Best Overall in the “Scrapbook Competition”: Hawi Tassisa
  • SNPhA Scholarship Winners: Aliyah Cruz, Jasmine Perry, Megan Griffin, Lee Arphai and Ashley Gleaton
  • UNC-SNPhA was also nominated for multiple awards including Chapter of the Year 2019-2020 and National JB Hill President of the Year (Julie Shiyayo).

“UNC-SNPhA has always been a powerhouse in providing care to underserved communities, so I am privileged to serve as this year’s president. None of our chapter accomplishments would be possible without our past leadership team and the support of our alumni donors. Thanks to the alumni support, members are able to attend conferences and represent our chapter on a national platform,” said Jasmine Perry, Pharm.D. Class of ’22 candidate and UNC-SNPhA president.

Michael Jay, Ph.D., UNC-SNPhA Chapter co-advisor added, “We are all so proud of the achievements of the UNC-SNPhA Chapter. The health initiative directors and the officers, especially the presidents past and current, have demonstrated outstanding leadership that has made UNC the envy of SNPhA chapters around the country.”
