The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ranks fourth in the world in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, up one spot from last year, according to the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities released by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy on Aug. 15.

Overall in 2020, the University ranked 30th in the world and is tied for 20th in the United States among global universities.

The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is an internationally recognized leader in pharmacy practice, education and research. The School is recognized as the No.1 school of pharmacy in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report and ranks No. 9 worldwide in the QS Global Rankings for pharmacy and pharmacology.

UNC-Chapel Hill ranked 6th in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences in the world in 2017, and 5th in 2018.

“World recognitions such as this speak to the caliber of our faculty, staff, preceptors and students who are working to improve human health around the globe, with the strong support of our alumni,” said Angela Kashuba, dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. “It is a privilege to be named among the world’s top pharmacy and pharmaceutical science universities.”

Academic Ranking of World Universities evaluates universities based on objective indicators, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in “Nature and Science,” papers indexed in major citation indices and the per capita academic performance of an institution. The organization first published university rankings in 2003, and now ranks more than 2,000 universities each year. The top 1,000 universities are published annually.

The scores are determined by the weighted indicators listed above, with the highest scoring university earning a score of 100. The other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score.
