The UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy and UNC Hospitals Department of Pharmacy have recommitted to serving the pharmacy community together through a renewal of their Partnership in Patient Care.

The Partnership in Patient Care, launched in 2010, was aimed at leveraging the strengths and opportunities of both the UNC Hospitals Department of Pharmacy and the School to create a culture of collaboration and progress. Based on the premise that through shared communication and initiatives come shared outcomes, the partnership has evolved over the past 10 years. Initially conceived to help each entity pursue individual goals, it has been re-charged to use the unique talents of individuals at both the School and the hospital to work together to tackle shared challenges and opportunities.

In the newest renewal of “Partnership 2.0,” the School and the hospital have committed to four key areas of joint collaboration: Practice Advancement, Education, Research, and Well-being. Committee members, representing both the School and the hospital, are selected and charged on an annual basis to ensure that progress is maintained, relevant, and applicable to frontline staff and faculty. The shared work of these committees is aimed at creating a culture of innovation and progress and solidifying the “One Pharmacy Community,” where each member feels connected to shared goals.

“Working synergistically allows us to deliver greater health care to our patients, expand hands-on learning opportunities for our students, and intensifies our scholarship to solve real-world problems,” said Angela Kashuba, dean of the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. “Our commitment to each other means that together, we are able to develop leaders and innovators in an inclusive environment.”

The partnership also enhances the quality and quantity of experiential education that UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy students receive, and the breadth and depth of point-of-care research being conducted.

“The degree of collaboration and interdependency between our entities is remarkable and unique.  There is a clear and genuine desire to support each other’s success,” said Udobi Campbell, PharmD, MBA, Regional Director of Pharmacy at UNC Health.

To date, successes of the Partnership in Patient Care include:

  • Growth and expansion of student experiential education within the UNC Health System
  • Growth and expansion of residency programs at UNC Hospitals
  • Development and refinement of the Layered Learning Practice Model
  • Increase in number and scope of acute and ambulatory clinical pharmacy services
  • Formalized process to incorporate UNCH pharmacy clinicians into the residential Pharm.D. curriculum
  • increase in the number of co-published papers between both organizations
  • A palpable and true sense of commitment and collaboration between the School and the Hospital.
