Mary Roth, PharmD, MHS, assistant professor in the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy, was awarded a Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award from the National Institute on Aging. Roth will receive $699,170 over five years to support her project “Improving the Quality of Medication Use in Older Adults.” The goal of the project is to design, implement, and evaluate a medication management program to improve the quality of medication use for older adults.

The purpose of the NIH Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award is to support the career development of investigators who have made a commitment to focus their research endeavors on patient-oriented research. These highly competitive awards are based on the candidate’s academic and research record, the potential for meaningful independent research, and the strength of the mentoring team.

Roth’s mentoring team is led by Morris Weinberger, Vergil N. Slee Distinguished Professor of Healthcare Quality Management in the Department of Health Policy and Administration at the UNC School of Public Health, a recognized expert in developing and evaluating strategies to improve patient outcomes and quality of care; Mick Murray, Mescal S. Ferguson Distinguished Professor and chair of the Division of Pharmaceutical Outcomes and Policy at the UNC School of Pharmacy whose work includes developing pharmacy services to improve drug therapy in older adults with chronic disorders; and William Campbell, dean emeritus, UNC School of Pharmacy who has been instrumental in fostering Roth’s development as a researcher.

Roth’s award is the second NIH Career Development Award received by the School of Pharmacy. Along with Angela Kashuba, PharmD, Roth establishes a new tradition of patient-oriented research excellence among the School’s junior faculty.
